Spencer Jones & George Lombard Jr., Yankees: While the month of May wasn't kind to the Yankees duo of George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones, June has been far kinder so far. An intercostal injury limited Jones to just five games in May. Lombard, meanwhile, struggled mightily in his first month in Double-A. But the pair hit back-to-back homers on Wednesday in the second leg of a doubleheader against Portland off of starter Jorge Juan. It was Lombard's first Double-A home run and he finished 2-for-4. Jones blasted off for the 11th time and went 3-for-4 in the win.

Connelly Early, LHP, Red Sox: Meanwhile, in the first leg of the doubleheader, Early improved to 5-0 with another win on Wednesday, striking out eight over five innings against Double-A Somerset. Early yielded six hits, three runs and a walk. Early has been one of the exciting breakout pitching prospects in 2025 in a Red Sox system full of them. Over 43.2 innings with Portland, Early is 5-0 with a 2.27 ERA, a 1.21 WHP and 66 strikeouts to 21 walks. The lefty has an opportunity to pitch his way to Boston by the end of 2025 if he continues to perform.

Andy Lugo, 3B/1B, Twins: Facing a bullpen stretched thin by key injuries and high usage from key late-inning arms, the Red Sox acquired RHP Jorge Alcala late Wednesday night from the Twins in exchange for corner infielder Andy Lugo.

The 21-year-old Lugo, who does not rank among Boston's Top 30 Prospects, had spent all of 2025 with High-A Greenville, where he hit .265/.327/.430 with four homers and four steals in 44 games. He primarily split time defensively between third and first base, and has also played a bit of left field. He's shown above-average raw power potential on his best contact and has a lean, athletic frame, but Lugo's in-game production suffers from a fairly aggressive approach. He's prone to expanding the strike zone, especially against breaking balls.

Alcala, 29, has an unsightly 8.88 ERA in 24.1 innings this year, including eight earned runs over last two combined outings. He throws hard, averaging just under 97 mph on his fastball, and a fairly deep array of secondaries including a newly-added curveball this year, but strike-throwing has long been an issue.

Bubba Chandler, RHP, Pirates: Chandler has struggled with his command of late and on Wednesday it came crashing down. He failed to make it out of the first inning against Triple-A St. Paul, walking four batters--including walking in a run--before he was pulled. Chandler is still overcoming the hurdle of harnessing his monster stuff. He has failed to pitch beyond the second inning in each of his last two outings and has finished with a strike rate above 62% in an outing just once since May 1 -- his previous two-inning outing against Memphis. The Pirates aren't likely to call Chandler up until he can prove this was truly just a blip.

Christian Moore, 2B/3B, Angels: After hitting just .234/.342/.323 over his first 34 games with Double-A Rocket City, Moore has been tremendous since his promotion to Triple-A Salt Lake. On Wednesday, Moore went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and a walk. The phenomenal night improved his Triple-A line to .350/.424/.575. Moore has been impressive over his 20 game sample in the hitting-friendly Pacific Coast League, and it’s very likely we see Moore with the Angels shortly.

Kash Mayfield, LHP, Padres: The Padres have an excellent history targeting prep talents in the draft. Last year, the team landed Mayfield  in the first round and so far he’s been excellent. On Wednesday, Mayfield had his best outing to date as he retired all nine batters he faced over three perfect innings. Mayfield struck out six in the effort as he generated nine swinging strikes on 39 pitches. Mayfield is a tall lefty with a prototypical frame, and good stuff. He could be a riser over the next few seasons.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.

German Ramirez, SS, Astros: Ramirez jumped onto the team’s recent Top 30 Prospects update and has continued to soar in the Florida Complex League. On Wednesday, Ramirez reached base all five times he came to the plate, collecting three singles and two walks. Ramirez is now hitting .314 with a 1.010 over his first 22 games in 2025. After seeing three games with Low-A Fayetteville in 2024, a return trip could be in store for Ramirez shortly.
