Wood, Caissie Headline Statcast Standouts, Plus Top Weekend Performers

Prospect Standouts
Jonatan Clase, OF, Mariners: Needing a boost for a struggling offense, the Mariners are calling up Clase, as first reported by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. Clase came into the season as the Mariners’ No. 10 prospect. He’s long had a tantalizing combination of power and speed, and was included in non-Top 100 Prospects to watch this year. He had 20 home runs and 79 steals last season. Strikeouts have long been Clase’s biggest issue, but he’s posted a 22.6% strikeout rate this year while hitting .311/.396/.622 for Triple-A Tacoma. Clase’s 30.0 feet per second average sprint speed this season was 11th fastest among Triple-A players.
Matt Shaw, 3B, Cubs: Shaw homered twice off Double-A Chattanooga starter Chase Petty, which is notable because Petty didn’t give up any home runs during the 2023 season. He also stole his third base of the season. After playing shortstop, second and third base in 2023, Shaw has focused on third base exclusively so far this year. He’s hitting .381/.552/.905.
Josue Briceño, C, Tigers: Briceño is off to an excellent start at the plate this year, but until Sunday, he’d been held homerless. The massive 6-foot-5, 200-pound catcher golfed a home run over the right field fence as part of a three-hit day. Briceño is hitting .379/.500/.483. Power isn’t a long-term concern for Briceño, but that was his first extra-base hit of the season.
Andy Pages, OF, Dodgers: Pages didn’t homer in his first eight games of the season. Since then, he’s been on an exceptional tear. Pages homered twice on Sunday, which gives him five in his past seven games, pushing him to third best in the Pacific Coast League. Pages is now hitting .371/.452/.694.
Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays: Caminero returned to Triple-A Durham from a stint on the injured list for a pulled quad. He showed little rust, as he hit a home run and doubled. His home run was measured at 110.5 mph, making it the hardest hit home run by any Durham Bull this season. Caminero is hitting .333/.400/.722.
Jonah Tong, RHP, Mets: Tong has been striking out batters at a rate that’s hard to fathom. In his second start of the season, Tong struck out 10 in just four innings. He struck out 11 in 4.1 innings in his 2024 debut. Tong’s 22.7 strikeouts per nine innings leads all MiLB pitchers. Tong struck out the side in the first, two on fastballs and one on his mid-80s breaking ball that is being classified as a cutter. He finished off the final batter of the inning with a 97 mph fastball that was his hardest pitch of the day. He got out of trouble in the second with a pair of strikeouts on 95 mph fastballs. He broke out a bigger, downer curveball to help him pick up three more strikeouts in the third, and he struck out two more in the fourth.
Cade Povich, LHP, Orioles: Povich was excellent for the third time in three 2024 starts. Povich gave up a solo home run to Carlos Narvaez, but otherwise was in complete control. He allowed that one hit and two walks while striking out 10 in 5.1 innings in an excellent pitchers’ duel against Clayton Beeter. Povich got 16 whiffs in 84 pitches, as his 91-93 mph fastball and low-80s sweeper were particularly effective. Povich is 1-1, 1.10 with 24 strikeouts and 5 walks in 16.1 innings for Triple-A Norfolk.
Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox: Anthony came into Saturday homerless for Double-A Portland. He quickly fixed that by homering off Robinson Pina in the first game of the Sea Dogs doubleheader against Reading. Anthony then added his second home run of the season with a shot off Efrain Contreras in the nightcap. He also stole his second base of the season. Anthony’s combination of power and plate discipline makes him one of the best prospects in baseball. He’s now hitting .333/.385/.708.
