Two Cubs Prospects End 2024 On High Note

Plus: The Brewers develop another promising and overlooked pitcher, Christian Moore returns to action & more.

Both Owen Caissie and Matt Shaw are giving Cubs fans something to get excited about in 2025. The Rays also land a pair of players in today’s BAPR, Christian Moore returns to Double-A Rocket City’s lineup and Dalton Rushing continues to flex his power.

Chad Patrick, RHP, Brewers: Patrick was traded twice in the span of six months last year. He went from the D-backs to the A’s in the July 31, 2023 Jace Peterson deal, and he was then sent to the Brewers in a deal for Abraham Toro last November. As has been the case with a number of pitchers, the Brewers seemed to have figured out how to unlock a new level of performance from Patrick. Pitching for Triple-A Nashville, Patrick held Memphis to three hits in six scoreless innings on Sunday. He walked no one and struck out 12, which tied his season’s best. He lowered his ERA to 2.95. Patrick doesn’t blow hitters away with velocity, but he sits at 92 mph and throws the kitchen sink at them, mixing four-seamers, sinkers, changeups, cutters and sliders. He also throws an above-average amount of strikes with a 65% strike percentage for the season and a 73% strike percentage on Sunday.

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: Caissie went 4-for-6 with a double and a home run as well as three runs scored for Triple-A Iowa. Caissie is finishing the season with his best month of work of the year. He’s hitting .326/.436/.674 in September with four home runs in 12 games. He’s hitting .276/.375/.482 overall. It’s been a solid season in Triple-A for Caissie, especially when you consider he turned 22 midway through the season.

Matt Shaw, 3B, Cubs: Alongside Caissie, Shaw went 4-for-5 with a triple and a home run on Sunday for Triple-A Iowa. Shaw is finishing the season in excellent fashion. This was his seventh multi-hit game in 11 September games, and it was his third home run in the past four games. Shaw has hit .296/.382/.565 in the 29 games since he was promoted to Triple-A and is hitting .283/.375/.493 overall this year.

Mac Horvath, 3B, Rays: Horvath went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and home run to help lead the High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods to a win over Hudson Valley in the South Atlantic League championship series opener. Acquired from the Orioles in the Zach Eflin trade in July, Horvath has continued to struggle at the plate after the trade. He hit .221/.291/.381 for the Hot Rods after hitting .232/.328/.417 for High-A Aberdeen.

Brody Hopkins, RHP, Rays: In the opener of the South Atlantic League championship series, Hopkins held Hudson Valley to one hit and one run over five innings of work, and three Bowling Green relievers provided four hitless innings of work. Bowling Green took a 5-1 win that puts them one win away from a league title. Roc Riggio led off the game by homering off Hopkins. Hopkins quickly settled down as only one other batter would even reach second base against him. Hopkins struck out seven. Hopkins had allowed only one hit in his final regular season start as well, so he finished his season by allowing two hits in 11 innings over his final two starts of the year.

Sebastian Walcott, SS, Rangers: Walcott homered on Saturday night, giving him his first Double-A home run. Walcott went 2-for-6, which was his third straight multi-hit game. He’s hitting .348/.375/.609 with Frisco and .265/.344/.452 overall.

Dalton Rushing, OF, Dodgers: Rushing went 3-for-4 with a home run on Saturday for Triple-A Oklahoma City. It was Rushing’s seventh home run in 32 games since he’s been promoted to Triple-A and his 24th overall this year. The offensive environment of the Pacific Coast League is more favorable for hitters than the Texas League, but Rushing has truly not missed a beat after his promotion. He’s continued to strikeout 20% of the time, while upping his walk rate to 16% from 11%. Rushing is hitting .276/.406/.509 in Triple-A compared to .270/.378/.512 at Double-A.

Christian Moore, 2B, Angels: Moore went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and four RBIs on Saturday for Double-A Rocket City. Moore had missed two weeks with a minor knee injury. He served as a DH in his first game back as he is hitting .347/.400/.584 overall.

RoboScout’s Top 120 Dynasty Targets To End The 2024 Season

Every week during the season, RoboScout ranks the top 25 hitters and pitchers per level. But as the season winds to a close, RoboScout refreshes its overall dynasty list to give Baseball America subscribers a sense of how the top dynasty targets stack up across the different levels of the minors. The list is headlined by top Padres, Twins and Red Sox prospects.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Trenton Maybin, OF, North Carolina (Class of 2026): Cameron Maybin was a first-round pick (10th overall) by the Tigers out of high school in 2005, became a four-time Top 100 prospect (including three years in the top 10), reached the big leagues when he was 20 and then went to the Marlins that offseason as part of the trade that brought Miguel Cabrera to Detroit. After a 15-year major league career that ended in 2021, Maybin now coaches one of most talented travel teams, the San Diego Padres Scout team, whose center fielder is his son, Trenton.

The younger Maybin is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds with an athletic build featuring a high waist and plus speed that he uses to glide around center field and defend his position well. He made one of the best defensive plays I saw all summer, shading the hitter toward right-center field, then taking an efficient route on a fly ball into the left-center field gap to make a diving catch at the warning track.
