Eduardo Quintero, OF, Dodgers: It's no secret that the Dodgers have the biggest cache of outfield prospects in the sport. There are arguments to be made that at least three—Josue De Paula, Mike Sirota and Quintero—could take the top spot in the system. On Tuesday, Quintero made his case. Facing Fort Wayne, he went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, two stolen bases and a grand slam as Great Lakes secured the shutout. Power hasn't been a big part of his game this season, but scouts believe a few mechanical tweaks could help him get to it more frequently. Tuesday night looks like a step in the right direction.

Jefferson Rojas, SS, Cubs: After a slow start to the season, Rojas has been excellent in the season's hottest month. He closed June on a high note, going 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI in his team's game against Columbus. The three knocks brought his June slash line to an excellent .340/.382/.600 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs. Perhaps more important, he's made way more contact. In 111 June plate appearances, he struck out just 12 times. For context, he struck out 17 times in 58 PAs in April.

Keyner Martinez, RHP, Giants: A year ago at this time, Martinez was just beginning to assert himself as a prospect. A few months later, he'd be ranked among the best arm talents in San Francisco's system. Now, he's taking it into overdrive. Martinez put a bow on June by spinning the best start of his young career. Facing Rancho Cucamonga, he strung together six innings of two-hit shutout ball with two walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts. The outing marked his second of the season with double-digit Ks and brought his total for the month to 41 in 22.2 innings.

Lazaro Montes, OF, Mariners: Montes has the kind of power that ranks among the best in the sport. He can lose balls over fences, across berms and onto nearby streets. That's been particularly true in June, which he spent obliterating Texas League pitching. He added another longball to his ledger on Tuesday—a solo blast against Springfield—that gave him an even dozen for the month and 24 for the season. He finished June with an eye-popping slash line of .299/.440/.759.

Andrew Fischer, 3B, Brewers: Anyone who's seen Fischer play knows he has the ability to make baseballs disappear in the blink of an eye. He did it again on Tuesday. In fact, he did it twice. ... in just five innings. Rain in the south stopped Biloxi and Chattanooga's contest, but not before Fischer pushed his season longball total to 26 (though Tuesday's efforts do not appear on his official tally just yet), tying him with Joshua Baez and Manuel Peña for the minor league lead.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.

Hayden Alvarez, OF, Angels

The 19-year-old Alvarez made his stateside debut last season in the Arizona Complex League, hitting .335/.427/.429 over 55 games. He made his full-season debut with Low-A Inland Empire over the final 20 games of the season. Alvarez returned to Low-A to begin the season, making the move to Rancho Cucamonga along with the new Angels affiliate.

So far on the year, Alvarez has hit .308/.415/.496 with eight home runs and 39 stolen bases. He’s showing a nice blend of on-base skills, speed and power, making him a nice under-the-radar prospect.

Alvarez enjoyed a tremendous month in June, as he showed a nice blend of power and speed by logging 15 extra-base hits and 17 stolen bases. Alvarez is showing average bat-to-ball skills, strong swing decisions with power and speed.

Quick Hits

Prospect news and notes from around baseball…

  • A’s righty Kenya Huggins had one of the wilder stat lines you’ll see from a starting pitcher. He struck out 11 batters over 5.2 innings for Double-A Midland, tying for the most strikeouts of any Top 30 arm, but he also allowed 10 hits, six runs and a homer.
