Tigers New Acquisition Has A Big Day
Plus: Jackson Jobe Keeps Dominating
It was a very big day for promotions as two Top 100 Prospects got the call to the majors, and a great story also made his MLB debut. Today is also Prospect Hot Sheet day, so you can see which prospects stood out over the past week.
Prospect Standouts
Thayron Liranzo, C, Tigers: Catcher Thayron Liranzo was one of the centerpieces of the deal that brought Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles. The offensive-minded backstop had struggled somewhat in the Midwest League with the Dodgers, but on Tuesday he showed the peak of his powers. Facing Lansing, Liranzo went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, his ninth and tenth of the year. The outburst also continues his early scorching spell with his new organization. Since the trade, he’s gone 12-for-34 with three home runs and nearly as many walks (8) as strikeouts (9).
Jackson Jobe, RHP, Tigers: Jackson Jobe is the top pitching prospect in the sport. On Tuesday, he showed why. Facing Erie, the righthander spun six shutout frames against Akron. He struck out two, allowed three hits and walked nobody. The outing dropped his Erie ERA to 2.01 and gave him 58 strikeouts in 53.2 innings at the level.
Max Muncy, SS, As: In a game where the Dodgers’ Max Muncy was playing third base for Oklahoma City, the A’s much younger Max Muncy went 4-for-4 with two doubles with a run scored and 3 RBIs for Triple-A Las Vegas. It continues Muncy’s exceptional August. He’s hitting .486/.558/1.000 with five home runs in 11 games this month.
Steven Zobac, RHP, Royals: In his start last week, Steven Zobac was spectacular. He went seven shutout innings with two hits, no walks and a dozen strikeouts. On Tuesday, he put together a very nice encore. Against Corpus Christi, he went five no-hit innings with three walks and seven strikeouts. After a rough month of July, Zobac has been fantastic in July. With Tuesday’s start included, he has 17.2 innings this month with five hits, three runs (none earned), four walks and 25 strikeouts.
Braden Nett, RHP, Padres: Braden Nett was one of the breakout prospects in last year’s Arizona Fall League. The righthander, who signed in 2022, got the start in the league’s championship game and has spent the entirety of this season in High-A, where he’s struggled with control and command. On Tuesday night, those problems vanished. Facing Dayton, Nett struck out nine without issuing a walk over six innings of three-hit, one-run ball. It was his first walk-free outing since July 14 and continued a strong month of August in which he’s gone 2-0, 2.16 with 17 strikeouts in 16.2 innings. The outing was his longest and set a season high for strikeouts.
Zebby Matthews, RHP, Twins: Matthews picked up the win in his first MLB appearance, holding the Royals to two runs and only one earned run on five hits. He walked no one and struck out five. Matthews didn’t get a lot of swings and misses, but he located his 95 mph fastball, 85-87 mph slider and low-90s cutter, keeping ahead of Royals hit
MLB Best Tools
The MLB Best Tools are compiled by surveying MLB managers and coaches for their opinions on the best tools in the majors leagues. Not surprisingly, Bobby Witt Jr. and Aaron Judge are all over the AL lists, while Shohei Ohtani dominates much of the NL results.
State Of The Organizations: NL Central
Geoff Pontes and JJ Cooper discuss all five NL Central clubs, looking at how they project at the big league level going forward as well as a deep dive into each farm system’s strengths and weaknesses.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Yasser Mercedes, OF, Twins: If a player is asked to repeat a level, you want to see him dominate it. That’s what Mercedes did this year in a return to the Florida Complex League. His batting average (.331) and on-base (.421) and slugging percentages (.568) each ranked among the league’s top 10. His 18 doubles and 26 extra-base hits led the league. Mercedes is a powerfully built outfielder whose balanced swing should produce the thump required for a classic corner-outfield masher. Scouts noticed that he simplified his swing this season, and the next step is to make better swing decisions.
What To Look Forward To
Tomorrow we’ll roll out Best Tools for all MiLB full-season leagues, so you can see which top prospects stood out as well as learn some names you may not know as well.
