Termarr Johnson Turns Things Around

Plus: The Astros promote a rising 20-year-old righty to full-season ball after just one start in the complex.

Today’s update features a quartet of prospect standouts, including more encouraging information for Pirates 2B Termarr Johnson after he struggled out of the gate to start the 2024 season.

Prospect Standouts

Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates: The first half of the season was not kind to Johnson. The 2022 first-rounder hit .194 in April, then followed it with a .205 mark in May. He kept taking walks, however, and his OBPs during those months were .375 and .386, respectively. Since June, he’s turned a corner. In that time, the 2024 Futures Gamer has hit .307/.418/.500 with seven home runs. He racked up two hits on Tuesday, bringing his current hitting streak to 16 games, the third-longest active stretch in the minors.

Hector Rodriguez, OF, Reds: In 2023, Rodriguez was one of the brighter prospects in Cincinnati’s system. He slammed 16 home runs and stole 18 bags in a season spent mostly at Low-A Daytona. He’s moved up to High-A this season and hasn’t missed much of a beat. On Tuesday, the former Mets farmhand clubbed two home runs in his team’s game against Fort Wayne. The blasts brought Rodriguez’s season total to eight longballs.

Gary Gill Hill, RHP, Rays: In his last start, Rays up-arrow prospect Gill Hill turned in his first clunker of the year. Against Columbia, the righthander was tagged for eight earned runs in 2.1 innings. The outing accounted for more than a third of the runs he’s let up all season. This time, he got back on track. Against Kannapolis, Gill Hill went six shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out seven. The outing lowered his season ERA to a sparkling 2.69.

Anderson Brito, RHP, Astros: The Astros saw enough from Brito after one start in the Florida Complex League to promote him to Low-A Fayetteville. A 5-foot-10 righthander that signed out of the Venezuela for just $10,000 in January of 2023, Brito made his professional debut in 2024 in the Dominican Summer League. He pitched to a 0.40 ERA with 40 strikeouts to six walks in 22.1 innings, earning a promotion to the FCL on July 13. He was then promoted again following one dominant scoreless four-inning performance. The undersized righty has serious stuff. He mixes a mid-90s fastball that touches 99 mph with ride, an 82 mph sweeper that has over a foot of horizontal break and an upper-80s changeup. Brito is another low-dollar find for an Astros organization that has made a habit of it over the last decade.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Gregory Sanchez, RHP, Rockies: Though he was hit around in Josh Norris’ live look, the Rockies righty is arguably the brightest young pitching prospect on the Dominican Summer League circuit this summer. He has a lively mid-90s fastball and slider combination, and Josh explains why there are some indicators suggesting he has a strong foundation to continue to build upon his early success. Sanchez was one of five DSL prospects who caught his attention this week, exclusively for Baseball America subscribers.
