Spencer Jones Blasts 453-Foot Homer Off Chase Dollander

Plus: Three other impressive prospect performances as we shift into postseason mode and prospect quick hits from both the majors and minors.

After a slow Monday that featured zero MiLB games, prospects returned with aplomb on Tuesday, including Yankees slugger Spencer Jones, who showed the gaudy power that places him near the top of New York’s Top 30 even despite the swing-and-miss concerns.

Angel Genao, SS, Guardians: Just two players this season hit .330 or better with 30 or more doubles, 10 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases. One is Kristian Campbell, the Red Sox prospect who can safely be counted among the sport’s biggest breakouts in 2024. The other player who hit those marks is Genao, the Cleveland shortstop prospect who opened eyes in 2022 before a knee injury muted his encore campaign. Now fully healthy, the 20-year-old Genao has spent the season showing all his gifts in full. With a championship on the horizon, Genao propelled High-A Lake County to a series-opening with a 3-for-5 night with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: Jones has plenty of impact potential, which showed up this season in his 53 extra-base hits, good for a tie for first place in all of Double-A. That immense power was on display early in Somerset’s playoff-opening win against Hartford. Facing Chase Dollander, the second-best pitching prospect in the game, Jones unloaded on a fastball and sent it an estimated 453 feet with an exit velocity of 115 mph. For perspective, there are just 26 hitters this season in the big leagues who have produced an EV of 115 mph or greater. Jones finished the night 3-for-5 with the home run, two singles and a stolen base.

Winston Santos, RHP, Rangers: Even though he ended up on the losing end of the ledger, Santos put forth one his best starts in what has been a breakout season. Facing Double-A Midland in the Texas League division series, Santos went six innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out a dozen Rockhounds hitters. The 12 Ks matched a season high, set in April against Greensboro. All told, Santos finished his season, which was split between High-A and Double-A with 138 strikeouts in 110.1 innings.

Mason Barnett, RHP, Athletics: In spring training, Barnett opened eyes with his mid-90s fastball and wipeout slider. He showed flashes of his potential during the regular season, and in doing so piqued enough evaluators’ interest to become part of the package used to bring reliever Lucas Erceg to Kansas City. Since switching organizations, the righthander has turned it up a notch or three. The run of dominance continued in the first game of the Texas League division series, when he spun six shutout innings with two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in the process of besting Winston Santos and Frisco. Combined with the regular season, Barnett has now posted these numbers in September: 19 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 BB, 25 Ks.

Prospect Quick Hits

  • Roman Anthony went 3-for-5 and Kyle Teel added three hard-hit balls in a 14-9 Triple-A Worcester win over Lehigh Valley where they touched up Mick Abel for eight earned runs in 2.1 innings

  • Hurston Waldrep punched out seven batters over six scoreless for Triple-A Gwinnett in a game where Ozzie Albies also went 2-for-3 with a homer on his rehab assignment

  • Nick Yorke picked up his first MLB hit off Lance Lynn. Yorke went 3-for-4 in a 3-1 Pirates loss to the Cardinals

  • Luisangel Acuña hit his first MLB homer in a 10-1 Mets win over the Nats. New York now has a two-game lead over the Braves in the wild card.

  • Bubba Chandler struck out eight more batters last night over 5.1 innings. Since his promotion in early August, he is 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 54 strikeouts to just 15 walks in 39.1 Triple-A innings.

The White Sox Offense Is Finishing Up A Historically Awful Season

The numbers in Chicago this season are quite ugly no matter how you dice them. Yet as J.J. Cooper takes a deep dive into the state of the White Sox system, it’s not quite clear when (or if) it’ll improve any time soon.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Nestor German, RHP, Orioles: An 11th-round pick last year out of Tarik Skubal’s alma mater Seattle, German put together an impressive season in 2024. German made 21 appearance and 12 starts across both Class A levels, pitching to a 1.59 ERA with 90 strikeouts to 17 walks over 73.2 innings. Throughout the season, German piggybacked with other pitchers, going 3-4 innings each time out. He mixes a four-seam fastball that sits 93-94 mph with 19-20 inches of induced vertical break, a upper-70s curveball with serious depth, as well as a changeup, slider and cutter. German has a deep mix, misses bats with all of his pitches and shows the ability to land all of his pitches for strikes.
