Prospect Standouts

Jeferson Quero, C, Brewers: Quero, one of the top prospects in the system, is expected to have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of injury after he hurt his right shoulder diving back into first base during the first inning of Triple-A Nashville’s first game of the season. Quero had walked in his first plate appearance of the season, but he had to leave the game after hitting the bag awkwardly. He hasn’t been placed on the injured list as of yet, but he did not play in either Saturday or Sunday’s games.

Jordan Beck, OF, Rockies: Sunday’s Albuquerque-El Paso game was one of the wildest games we’ll see in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League this year, and Beck was right in the middle of it. Beck went 3-for-5 with a home run and a triple with three runs scored and four RBIs in the Isotopes’ 16-15 loss to El Paso. Beck was promoted to Triple-A to start the season despite having just 50 games at Double-A Hartford to end last year. He’s seemed up to the task so far, as he’s hitting .417/.467/1.083.

Trey Lipscomb, 3B, Nationals: Lipscomb didn’t make the Nationals Opening Day roster despite a strong spring, but Washington called him up before Saturday’s game. And in the two games since, he’s kept hitting just like he had all spring. Lipscomb went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in his MLB debut on Saturday. Starting at third base again on Sunday, he was even better, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run. Lipscomb has played all around the infield, but he’s primarily a third baseman. He now has a chance to claim that job full-time while Nick Senzel recovers from a fractured thumb.

Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays: Caminero hit his first Triple-A home run on Sunday, taking John Means out to straight center field. Caminero has gotten a hit in each of his first three games, but Sunday’s home run was his first extra-base hit of the season. Because he jumped straight to the majors from Double-A last year, Caminero got his first MLB home run before his first Triple-A home run. He had two hits, a home run and a stolen base, but he left the game after suffering a leg injury running to first base in the sixth inning. Caminero pulled up as he ran through the bag, favoring his left leg. He was pulled from the game and replaced by C.J. Hinojosa.

Paul Skenes, RHP, Pirates: Skenes threw three perfect innings in his 2024 debut, striking out five. Skenes’ velocity, as usual, was exceptional. Skenes sat at 100 mph and touched 101.2. His softest fastball of the day was 99 mph.

Jack Leiter, RHP, Rangers: Round Rock righthander Jack Leiter (Rangers) was generally dominant in his first outing of the season. Pitching in relief after Michael Lorenzen threw 2.2 innings. Leiter retired the first 13 batters he faced. He did give up a two-run home run to Joey Loperfido in his fifth inning of work, but he finished the game with nine strikeouts and no walks, having faced just two over the minimum in five innings. Leiter sat at 94-96 mph with his fastball, and relied heavily on his cutter.
