Sebastian Walcott, Chase Dollander Have Our Attention

Plus: The Angels' third-round pick spurns pro ball & opts to return to school

Today’s update features a quartet of prospect standouts, including more encouraging information for Pirates 2B Termarr Johnson after he struggled out of the gate to start the 2024 season.

Prospect Standouts

Sebastian Walcott, SS, Rangers: After a horrid April and May where he hit .195/.326/.315 over his first 44 games, Walcott has turned it around. Since June 1, Walcott has hit .293/.348/.521 over 36 games. He continued his hot hitting on Wednesday by going 3-for-4 and connecting for his ninth home run of the season. The game was suspended in the eighth due to weather, meaning Walcott will likely have one more plate appearance when the game is resumed.  One of the most exciting and tooled up players in the minor leagues, Walcott is starting to scratch the surface of his immense talent.

Jhancarlos Lara, RHP, Braves: Lara has some of the best stuff in the Braves organization but the performance hasn’t always matched this season. On Wednesday, Lara was in a groove as he tossed six scoreless innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six. Lara sits 96-98 mph on his four-seam fastball and has been up to 100 mph this season. He mixes a hard cutter and a changeup, his cutter is by far his best bat-misser sitting 88-90 mph with heavy cut.

Charles McAdoo, 3B/OF, Pirates: Entering the season, McAdoo was a forgotten man when ranking the Pirates system. That’s no longer the case. McAdoo continues to hit, going 3-for-4 with a home run on Wednesday to raise his Double-A slash line to .284/.370/.534 with five home runs. A physical corner outfielder with a solid balance of hit, approach and power, McAdoo has put together one of the best offensive seasons in the Pirates’ system.

Dylan Beavers, OF, Orioles: It’s been up and down season for Beavers in 2024, but last night the Orioles outfield prospect found his “A” swing. Beavers slugged two home runs off of Akron starter Tommy Mace. He reached base four times in the game while driving in three RBIs and scoring two runs. Beavers has tools and will show flashes of an above-average regular, but he’s been far too inconsistent as a professional.

Chase Dollander, RHP, Rockies: The Rockies' No. 2 prospect made his Double-A debut on Wednesday night in Hartford. Dollander went four innings allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out five. Dollander threw 72 pitches (49 strikes) and combined with three relievers in the Yard Goats win. Dollander has regained his fastball quality since his junior season at Tennessee where he went from the consensus top pitcher in the class to an afterthought behind Paul Skenes. Dollander is arguably the best Rockies' pitching prospect since Jon Gray.

DRAFT STUNNER

Ryan Prager Opts To Return To Texas A&M In 2025

In a shocking development on Wednesday afternoon, Texas A&M ace Ryan Prager turned down the Angels to return to College Station for 2025. The Angels made Prager their third-round selection at No. 81 overall in this month’s draft and the pick had a $948,600 slot value. Prager ranked No. 66 on BA’s draft board and was expected to go inside the top two rounds. It’s a blow to the Angels’ draft class and a win for the Aggies. Carlos Collazo has more on the decision below.

AL EAST DRAFT PROSPECTS WITH INTRIGUING DATA

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Payton Tolle, LHP, Red Sox: Tolle is a fascinating project for Red Sox pitching development as a 6-foot-6, 250-pound lefthander who throws from an extreme sidearm slot yet somehow manages impressive IVB numbers on his fastball. He also throws a true gyro slider with shape that impressed Eli Ben-Porat, who took a deep dive into draft picks for every AL East organization with impressive data this week at Baseball America.
