Prospect Standouts
Alex Freeland, SS, Dodgers: Freeland’s breakout season continued Wednesday. The Dodgers prospect hit his 12th home run of the season and 10th with Double-A Tulsa. Freeman went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Freeland has shown a well-balanced skill set in 2024 with approach, contact, power and the ability to stick in the infield.
Xavier Isaac, 1B, Rays: The Rays sent shockwaves when they drafted Isaac No. 29 overall in 2022. Two years later, it ranks as one of the best picks of the first round. He hit his 14th home run of the season last night to raise his OPS to .944. Not only has Isaac impressed at the plate, he has also showing better athleticism in 2024 with average or better run times. Isaac is one of the best prospects in the lower minors this season.
Thomas Harrington, RHP, Pirates: The Pirates’ pitching development is enjoying a strong season in 2024. Several of their top pitching prospects are performing, including Harrington, who continued his strong season with Double-A Altoona Wednesday night. He tied his career high with 11 strikeouts over 5.2 innings while allowing one run on five hits and two walks. Harrington’s ERA dropped after this start to 2.41 on the season with a 1.02 WHIP.
Ryan Clifford, 1B, Mets: It was a brutal first two months for the Mets’ No. 8 prospect. Clifford hit .192/.371/.298 over his first 46 games. In the 30 games since the calendar flipped to June, Clifford is hitting .255/.414/.602 with 28 strikeouts to 25 walks. Those numbers climbed again after Wednesday’s game. Clifford went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs. Clifford’s first home run was a grand slam in the seventh inning, before launching his second in his final at-bat of the game.
Adam Macko, LHP, Blue Jays: The hits keep on coming for the Blue Jays. The team announced Wednesday that Macko had been placed on the 7-day minor league injured list with forearm soreness. Macko is the latest injury to a battered Blue Jays system. Just hours before Macko’s injury update went public, Ricky Tiedemann, the Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect, left his start on Wednesday with left forearm tightness. The Blue Jays currently have Brandon Barriera and Landen Maroudis recovering from elbow surgery, while Tiedemann and Macko’s status for the rest of 2024 is up in the air.
Jordan Lawlar, SS, D-backs: D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told the media on Wednesday that top prospect Jordan Lawlar injured his left hamstring running from first to third base in an ACL game on Monday. Lawlar missed time already this season after tearing a ligament in his right thumb. Lawlar returned to the Reno lineup in June 11 and then missed more than month with a hamstring strain. Lawlar was working his way back in the complex as he recovered from the hamstring strain. After injuring again, he’s likely to miss 6-8 weeks likely limiting his return to early September.
Ricky Tiedemann, LHP, Blue Jays: Tiedemann's return to Triple-A Buffalo's rotation after a stint on the injury list didn't last long. He was removed from Wednesday's start with left forearm tightness after one inning. Tiedemann has had a long history of injury issues dating back to last season. Earlier this season, Tiedemann went on the IL on April 12 due to an ulnar nerve inflammation. He made one appearance in the Florida Complex League followed by three rehab starts for Low-A Dunedin before returning to Buffalo. Tiedemann pitched one inning for Buffalo, allowing one hit, a run and three walks before leaving with the injury. Over the last two seasons, Tiedemann has pitched just a total of 60 innings across 22 starts.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Otto Kemp, 3B, Phillies: Third baseman Otto Kemp didn’t receive much attention in the draft, but he is beginning to get noticed now. The Phillies signed Kemp as an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of Division II Point Lama Nazarene. This season, he earned a quick promotion to Double-A Reading after hitting .333/.440/.533 in 41 games at High-A Jersey Shore. Phillies assistant GM of player development Preston Mattingly said that Kemp is the “total package.” He brings power, plate discipline, speed and strong defense.
