Roman Anthony Makes Strong First Impression

Plus: Enrique Bradfield nearly hits for the cycle and Rhett Lowder earns a promotion.

Today’s BAPR offers a snapshot of prospects settling into new surroundings, including Roman Anthony, Enrique Bradfield and Rhett Lowder, plus notable assignments and performances so far for 2024 first-round picks.

Prospect Standouts

Enrique Bradfield, OF, Orioles: Bradfield, who was recently promoted to Double-A Bowie, went 3-for-3 and walked twice to reach base five times on Tuesday. Bradfield fell a home run short of the cycle, as he hit his 15th double and fourth triple of the season. He also went 2-for-4 on stolen bases, raising his stolen base total to 63, which is second best in the minors. Bradfield’s season has been solid overall. He is hitting .271/.357/.369.

Cory Lewis, RHP, Twins: Lewis missed the first half of the season with a shoulder injury, but he’s been on a roll for Double-A Wichita ever since he came off the injured list in June. Lewis did have one awful outing where he gave up seven runs in 3.1 innings. But he’s allowed only four runs in his past five starts. On Tuesday he went 5.1 innings, allowing five hits. He walked three and struck out seven. Lewis gave up a home run to Harry Ford to start the game, but that was the only run he allowed.

Caden Dana, RHP, Angels: Dana worked eight innings for the third time this year, holding Double-A Montgomery to three hits and two runs, one of which was earned. Dana struck out nine, one off of his season high. Dana’s 2.64 ERA with Rocket City is third best in the Southern League and he leads the league with 131 strikeouts.

Keaton Anthony, 1B, Phillies: Anthony went 2-for-5 with a triple and a home run for High-A Jersey Shore on Tuesday, adding to his impressive season. Anthony ranks among the top 10 in the minors in batting average. He’s hitting .336/.429/.481 overall, as the Iowa product has proven to be an excellent nondrafted free agent signing.

Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox: Anthony went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs. It was Anthony’s best game since he got promoted to Triple-A Worcester a week ago. He’s now hitting .333/.379/.556 for the Woo Sox, and is hitting .274/.368/.494 with 16 home runs overall. Anthony was one of the standouts in our annual Best Tools balloting.

Rhett Lowder, RHP, Reds: The Reds have promoted Lowder, their 2023 first-round pick, from Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Louisville. Lowder made five starts at High-A Dayton before he was bumped up to Chattanooga. He struggled early in his time at Chattanooga, but he’s allowed just two runs in his last five starts, going 3-0, 0.62 with 15 hits allowed in 29 innings. He’s struck out 27 and walked seven over that stretch. Overall Lowder is 6-4, 3.86 in 102.2 innings.

How Are 2024 First-Round Picks Faring?

Prior to yesterday’s games, Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo checked in on notable assignments and early performances for all 2024 first-round picks, plus five picks from the later rounds who are already off to hot starts in their pro careers.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Travis Sykora, RHP, Nationals: Speaking of strong performances, Sykora struck out 10 batters over five innings while allowing just one earned run for Low-A Fredericksburg last night. It was Sykora’s third outing with double-digit strikeouts in his last five appearances. The 20-year-old Nationals righty has been one of their breakout performers this year, and was the focus of this month’s Washington organization report below.
