Prospect Standouts

Jackson Merrill, OF, Padres: The center fielder has settled into being a very solid regular for the Padres. He’s hitting for average and getting on base, but at this early point in his big league career, he’s not hitting for much power. Merrill came into Monday with just two extra-base hits in his past 19 games. He went 2-for-3 on Monday with the longest home run he’s hit in the majors, a 397-foot seventh-inning shot that cut the Rockies’ lead to one run.

Starlyn Caba, SS, Phillies: Caba, the team’s No. 5 prospect, went 2-for-3 with a double on Monday for the FCL Phillies. Caba is off to an excellent start in his U.S. debut. He’s hitting .364/.517/.636 for the FCL Phillies. The only blemish on his record so far is he’s been caught stealing three times compared to two stolen bases. Earlier this month, Baseball America’s Josh Norris identified Caba as one of 10 particularly intriguing players in the Florida Complex League.

Spencer Arrighetti, RHP, Astros: Arrighetti had a rough introduction to the major leagues as he gave up seven runs in three innings against the Royals in his MLB debut. Arrighetti didn’t get his ERA into single digits until his fourth MLB start, but this month, he’s showing he’s starting to settle in. Arrighetti allowed two runs and five hits in five innings while picking up his first MLB win. Arrighetti filled the strike zone with a 67% strike rate.

Felnin Celesten, SS, Mariners: Celesten, the team’s No. 8 prospect, had a breakout game on Monday in the Arizona Complex League, hitting a pair of home runs in a three-hit day. Celesten has yet to have a hitless game since the ACL season began. He’s working on a seven-game hitting streak and is now hitting .423/.516/.846.

Did the Rays do it again?

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Joe Rock, LHP, Rays: Rock was acquired from Colorado this past offseason in exchange for speedster Greg Jones. With the Rockies in 2024, the lefthander spun his wheels a bit and finished 1-10 with a 4.66 ERA. With Triple-A Durham this season, Rock is rolling. He was excellent in his most recent outing, against Nashville, when he punched out six hitters over five innings while allowing just one unearned run. Nothing in Rock’s arsenal is a particularly knockout offering, but his ability to mix, match, command and change eye levels from a deceptive delivery should be enough to help him reach the big leagues.

In case you missed it…
