Prospect Standouts
Joe Boyle, RHP, Athletics: Boyle’s lively high-90s fastball has always been hard to hit. In 2022, he held opponents to a .141 average. That hasn’t always been true since he reached the majors, but when Boyle is around the strike zone, he remains very hard to square up. Boyle held the Pirates to one hit over five innings against the Pirates, allowing one run. Control has always been an issue for Boyle. He did walk four compared to four strikeouts, but he did a good job of relying on his slider to keep the Pirates off balance.
Luis Morales, RHP, Athletics: The A’s are expected to activate RHP Luis Morales and assign him to High-A Lansing on Tuesday, according to a report from Francys Romero. Morales’ start to the season was slowed by shoulder fatigue. The 21-year-old righty dazzled in a limited showing last season, striking out 53 batters across 44 innings while reaching Lansing in his first pro season. He ranks No. 78 in our Top 100 on the strength of his upper-90s fastball and plus slider.
Jonah Tong, RHP, Mets: The Mets promoted righthander Jonah Tong from Low-A St. Lucie to High-A Brooklyn. Tong had a rough 2023 season with a 6.00 ERA in 21 innings, 22 walks and 38 strikeouts between St. Lucie and the Rookie-level Florida Complex League, but in 2024 he has yet to allow an earned run in 18.2 innings while posting a sparkling 36-5 K-BB mark. His turnaround isn’t just about a pitcher having success repeating a level. Tong’s stuff has jumped as well, as he’s now pitching at 91-94 mph and touching 97, a jump of about 4 mph from his top-end velocity from last year.
Brandon Barriera, LHP, Blue Jays: It was announced on Monday that Toronto’s No. 4 prospect and 2022 first-round pick Brandon Barriera underwent a hybrid elbow surgery. The procedure combines a traditional Tommy John surgery ligament replacement and an internal brace procedure. The surgery was announced on Twitter via Barriera’s agent Nate Heisler of Klutch Sports Group. Barriera made one appearance in 2024 going 1.1 innings before leaving the game with injury. The lefthander is likely to miss not only the rest of 2024 but most of the 2025 season.
Jordan Beck, OF, Rockies: The Rockies’ No. 3 prospect was called up by the team on Monday and the outfielder is set to make his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Marlins in Miami. Beck has hit .307/.405/.594 with five home runs over 25 games with Triple-A Albuquerque, while dramatically cutting his year over year strikeout rate. At the time of his callup, Beck ranked in the top 10 in the Pacific Coast League in a variety of statistics including runs, RBIs and OPS. The former Tennessee star and 2022 supplemental first-round pick provides the Rockies with a plus power bat with strong on-base skills and the athleticism to handle all three outfield positions.
The Tugboat Continues To Intrigue
Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Matt Wilkinson, LHP, Guardians: Wilkinson is arguably the most fascinating prospect in the game right now and his public persona borders on the stuff of folk hero. Affectionately known as Tugboat, Wilkinson has a baseball journey that dates back to his time as a standout on a Canadian Little League World Series team where he pitched a standout performance in losing effort against Mexico. He ended up at Central Arizona JC where the Guardians selected him in the 10th round of last July’s draft. He had arguably one of the best starts of the season on Thursday, striking out 15 batters over six hitless innings. Geoff Pontes explains for Baseball America subscribers in this week’s Hot Sheet why Wilkinson has some outlier traits that make him very intriguing despite pedestrian velocity.
