Thomas Harrington, RHP, Pirates: The Pirates are calling up their No. 3 prospect to make his big league debut on Tuesday against the Rays, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Harrington, 23, opened the year with Triple-A Indianapolis but did not appear in a game. He was in the mix for Pittsburgh’s final rotation spot, which went to Carmen Mlodzinski, out of spring training following an injury to RHP Jared Jones. Harrington ended 2024 with Triple-A Indianapolis, where he pitched to a 3.33 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 46 innings. The 36th pick in the 2022 draft has diligently improved his arsenal in pro ball and now has a deep, varied pitch mix consisting of multiple low-90s fastball shapes as well as an above-average slider and changeup. He ranks No. 73 on Baseball America’s Top 100.

Ryan Johnson, RHP, Angels: The Angels made headlines when they carried Johnson on their Opening Day roster. The 2024 second-rounder out of Dallas Baptist skipped the minor leagues entirely on his way to Anaheim. His first MLB appearance was rocky—four hits, one walk and five runs in 1.2 innings—but he righted the ship Monday by picking up the save in an extra-inning win for the Angels. He entered with a two-run lead in the 10th inning with an automatic runner on second base. A run scored but Johnson otherwise allowed a hit and struck out one to notch the save.

Jacob Wilson, SS, Athletics: Wilson pulled a 341-foot home run down the left field line at Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park. The blast represented not only the rookie’s first career home run—it left that bat at 100.2 mph—but the first by an A’s player in their new digs. Wilson added strength in the offseason and swung a hot bat in Cactus League play, swatting four home runs in 19 games while hitting .308 and striking out just two times.

Kumar Rocker, RHP, Rangers: Rocker’s 2025 debut was a very rough one. Rocker gave up four straight hits to start his outing, including a two-run home run to Matt McLain. He then gave up a three-run homer to Elly De La Cruz in the second. Rocker did throw a scoreless third inning before exiting, but he gave up seven hits and six runs in three innings. Rocker got just one swing and miss on his fastball and McLain’s homer came on a fastball. His slider was generally effective, but De La Cruz’s homer came off a slider.

Alexander Canario, OF, Pirates: The Pirates acquired Canario from the Mets for cash considerations. Canario is out of options. He was designated for assignment by the Mets after a strong spring where he hit .306/.419/.611. With the Pirates, he’ll get a chance to show he can be a backup outfielder (on a team that has Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds and Tommy Pham as regulars). Canario, 24, has more than 500 plate appearances in Triple-A and has shown power potential, but time is running out on him getting a significant opportunity.

Jake Mangum, OF, Rays: With Josh Lowe going on the injured list with an oblique injury, the Rays called up Mangum for his first MLB appearance as a 29-year-old. He went 0-for-3 with a walk in his debut. But on Monday, Mangum was exceptional. He singled in the third and stole second. He then singled again in the fourth to drive in two runs. He added a ground-rule double in the sixth, scoring soon thereafter. He added a fourth hit in the eighth inning and then stole his second base of the game. Mangum is now hitting .571/.625/.714 with two steals in two attempts.

Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: When he didn’t begin the season on the Yankees’ Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre roster, it became a fait accompli that Jones was returning to Double-A Somerset. Now it’s official, as the Patriots announced that Jones headlines their break camp roster. Jones was promoted to Double-A for his final 17 games in 2023 and spent the entirety of 2024 there, but his struggles with strikeouts (200 in 55 plate-appearances) meant that the Yankees have decided he needs some more time in the Eastern League.
