Prospect Standouts

Drew Thorpe, RHP, White Sox: Drew Thorpe was a well-traveled man this offseason. After leading the minor leagues in the strikeouts with the Yankees, he was shipped to San Diego as part of the package used to bring Juan Soto to New York. A few months later, he was flipped again, this time to Chicago to bring righty Dylan Cease to the Padres. Now with Double-A Birmingham, Thorpe has continued striking people out in bunches. He finished his turn Tuesday with seven more strikeouts, bringing his season total to 28 in 30 innings over five starts. Perhaps more impressive, he finished his most recent start with 22 swings and misses, the most of any pitcher in Double-A that day.

Paul Skenes, RHP, Pirates: It’s not unusual to see top Pirates prospect Paul Skenes dominate a lineup. He’s done it every time he’s taken the mound this season. Until recently, however, his firepower came only in short bursts. On Tuesday, that changed. Facing Buffalo, the LSU product went six shutout innings, allowed four hits and a walk and struck out 10. After going 12.2 innings over his first four starts, Skenes has lasted a combined 10.1 innings over his last two starts. He now has 41 strikeouts in 23 innings while allowing just one earned run.

Tink Hence, RHP, Cardinals: In a marquee matchup against Tulsa, Cardinals righthander Tink Hence showed he had no problem cutting through a prospect-laden lineup. By the time he was finished, Hence had struck out 10 hitters while allowing a run on two hits and two walks. He got 15 swings and misses in the process. Perhaps even more notable for someone whose main question involves long-term durability, Hence lasted seven innings and threw 94 pitches. The innings, pitches and strikeout totals were all career bests.

David Festa, RHP, Twins: Although he flies a bit under the radar at time, Twins righthander David Festa is one of the better pitching prospects in the sport. He showed why on Tuesday by striking out 10 hitters in five dominant innings against Louisville. Festa used a four-pitch mix led by a mid-90s fastball and mid-80s slider to carve up the Bats for his first double-digit strikeout game of the season. He got 10 whiffs, including five apiece on his heater and slider.

Samuel Basallo, C, Orioles: Beyond anything he did at the plate, the most important part of Samuel Basallo’s day came when he got behind it. Tuesday’s game was the first Basallo had caught all season after suffering a stress fracture that had limited him to DH and first base all year. Beyond catching all nine innings, Basallo went 2-for-5 with a double and his fourth home run of the season.

Colby Thomas Shows Power And Speed

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Colby Thomas, OF, Athletics: The A’s outfielder is off to a dream start in his first taste of Double-A. Thomas hit .317/.382/.582 with five home runs through 20 games. He stole eight bases without being caught. The power-speed threat found a good fit for his play style in Midland and has been one of the better performers throughout Oakland’s system so far this year.
