Orioles Set To Call Up Coby Mayo (Reports)

Plus: The Angels reportedly promote Christian Moore to Double-A and four other prospect stars who caught our attention Thursday.

Quite a night for prominent callups and promotions. The Orioles are set to feature two of baseball’s 12 best prospects in their infield. Plus, we dive into the 2024 MLB Draft class now that the signing deadline has passed and dish on a Rangers RHP you should keep your eye on.

Prospect Standouts

Coby Mayo, 3B, Orioles: As first reported by MASN’s Roch Kubato, the Orioles are calling up third baseman Coby Mayo, bringing up the best prospect they still had in the minors (after Jackson Holliday’s promotion earlier this week). Mayo’s arrival will help fill the hole created by Jordan Westburg’s injury. Westburg is expected to miss most of the rest of the regular season with a broken hand. Mayo has some of the best power in the minors. He’s hit .308/.384/.619 with 23 home runs in 81 games. The biggest questions surrounding Mayo’s readiness revolve around his defense. He’s had throwing accuracy issues–nine of his 10 errors at third base have come on inaccurate throws. He’s really struggled when he’s asked to play first base. Mayo has committed six errors in just 20 games at first base, including three errors in 11 games at first base in July.

Christian Moore, 2B, Angels: The Angels are once again moving a top draft pick aggressively. The club will promote 2024 first-rounder Christian Moore to Double-A Rocket City this weekend, according to The Athletic’s Sam Blum. The No. 8 pick in the July draft, Moore has appeared in just two games with Low-A Inland Empire, going 6-of-11 with a homer and six RBIs. He is one of just three top-10 picks to officially debut, joining Travis Bazzana and JJ Wetherholt. The Angels’ top three prospects (Caden Dana, Nelson Rada and Moore) are now all in Double-A. Given how aggressive Los Angeles has been with recent first-rounders Nolan Schanuel and Zach Neto, it’s plausible Moore could follow a similar trajectory through the minors if he continues to hit.

Jackson Ferris, LHP, Dodgers: When the Dodgers dealt first baseman Michael Busch to the Cubs, they received two high-upside prospects in return: outfielder Zyhir Hope and lefty Jackson Ferris. The latter has always shown tantalizing stuff but at times has been held back by spotty control and command. On Thursday, however, it all came together. Facing Cedar Rapids, Ferris threw eight no-hit innings with four walks and six strikeouts. He finished with 98 pitches, 61 strikes and a dozen whiffs.

Caden Dana, RHP, Angels: A week after spinning a complete game, Angels righthander was at it again on Thursday night. This time, Dana went seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out seven. The outing was his sixth of seven or more frames. For the season, Dana has 122 strikeouts against 33 walks over 111.1 innings, all with Double-A Rocket City.

Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays: Since returning from the injured list, top Rays prospect Junior Caminero has been on fire. That trend continued on Thursday, when the infielder popped another home run. Caminero, who made his big league debut in 2023, went 2-for-3 with the longball, his 11th of the season. The blast left the bat at 97 mph and traveled an estimated 382 feet.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE TIGER

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Izack Tiger, RHP, Rangers: In the spring, Izack Tiger was one of the Rangers’ most eye-opening prospects. Injury delayed the start of his first full regular-season campaign until May 31, and he didn’t reach Low-A until June 29. Once he reached Down East, he dominated. With the Wood Ducks, Tiger struck out 22 over 18.2 innings and allowed just a dozen hits. He earned a promotion to High-A on July 30 and made his Hickory debut on Thursday. Facing Asheville, which plays in one of the most hitter-friendly environments in the minor leagues, Tigers spun five two-hit shutout innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.
