Orioles, Pirates Prospects Catch Our Attention
Plus: Justyn-Henry Malloy and Angel Genao are two notable names on the move

Prospect Standouts
Justyn-Henry Malloy, DH/OF, Tigers: With Spencer Torkelson demoted to the minors, the Tigers called up Malloy to make his MLB debut. Malloy went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first game. He’s serving as a DH this week, but the plan is for him to start getting some work in the outfield before long. Malloy isn’t going to replace the power that Torkelson showed last year before his 2024 struggles, but he does give the Tigers a hitter who knows how to work counts and get on base. He’s posted a better than .400 on-base percentage at every stop of his MiLB career since 2022.
Jesus Palacios, RHP, Orioles: Palacios doesn’t have overwhelming velocity, but the 19-year-old Venezuelan has been dominant in his brief time in the Florida Complex League. Palacios struck out 10 of the 13 batters he faced on Monday, holding the FCL Braves to one hit in four scoreless innings. It was the first start of Palacios’ season, but in five appearances, he’s 2-0, 1.23 with 24 strikeouts and eight walks and only three hits allowed in 14.2 innings. Palacios’ low-90s fastball pairs well with an effective slider.
Tony Blanco Jr., 1B, Pirates: He’s yet to play a game in the full season minors, but if you’re ranking the players with the best raw power in the minors, Blanco Jr. needs to be on the list. Until this year, he’s struggled to make enough contact for it to matter. He’s showing some encouraging signs so far in the FCL. Blanco went 2-for-4 with a triple on Monday and is now hitting .341/.412/.636.
Sheng-En Lin, SS/3B, Reds: Lin went 3-for-3 on Monday in the Arizona Complex League. It was his second three-hit game of the young season, as he raised his slash line to .364/.473/.545. When Lin signed there was some question as to whether he’s be an outfielder or an infielder, and he played both center field and shortstop in 2023. This year, he’s stayed in the dirt, bouncing back and forth between shortstop and third base, both positions where his plus arm is very useful.
Angel Genao, SS, Guardians: Genao led the Carolina League with 61 hits and 99 total bases while batting .341/.383/.553 with six home runs and 12 stolen bases in 44 games. That performance earned him a promotion from Low-A Lynchburg to High-A Lake County. A torn meniscus in his knee limited Genao with Lynchburg last season, but this year the switch-hitter has emerged as a Top 100 Prospect, one who trailed only the Phillies’ Aidan Miller among 20U shortstops in key measures such as OPS, wRC+ and isolated slugging.
Royals bullpen help could be on the way…
Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Walter Pennington, LHP, Royals: Pennington was one of the surprise stars of spring training as he struck out 16 of the 29 batters he faced while posting a 1.23 ERA in nine appearances. While that was impressive, it was fair to wonder if the funky lefty could do the same thing in Triple-A over a longer stint. He has cleared that hurdle as well. Pennington, a nondrafted free agent the Royals signed in 2020 out of the Colorado School of Mines, made three appearances last against Indianapolis. He faced 21 batters. He struck out 12 of them and allowed only one to reach base. He’s posted a 1.85 ERA overall with a hard-to-fathom 62-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 39 innings. It’s best to describe Pennington as a slider-fastball reliever. He uses his slider more than anything else against righties or lefties. He spots his low-90s fastball, but it’s that plus slider that ties up hitters. With the Royals needing bullpen help, it’s hard to believe Pennington won’t get the call at some point.
In case you missed it…
We identified Pennington as a name to watch back in spring training.
One of the hottest Spring Training performers?
Walter Pennington, LHP, Royals
Don’t feel too bad if his name doesn’t ring a bell.
He pitched his way to Triple-A last year. But nothing on his resume offered hints that he’d post a 51.6% strikeout percentage this spring.
