Prospect Standouts

Walker Jenkins, OF, Twins: The Twins’ 2023 first-round pick had a subtly excellent day on Tuesday in Low-A. Jenkins went 1-for-3 with single, but he also drew three walks and stole two bases in two attempts. It continued a trend for Jenkins. His power hasn’t really shown up yet in the FSL, but he is getting on base thanks to 13 walks, compared to only 10 strikeouts, in 84 plate appearances. He’s currently hitting .243/.357/.371.

Echedry Vargas, SS, Rangers: After a scorching summer in the Arizona Complex League in 2023, Vargas has begun to find his footing in full-season ball. The infielder went 3-for-5 on Tuesday against Carolina, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. The home run was Vargas’ eighth of the season, and the effort gave him a strong start to July after finishing June with an .886 OPS for the month.

Jaden Hamm, RHP, Tigers: In spring training, Tigers righthander was one of the sport’s breakout stars. He’s taken that momentum into the regular season and become one Detroit’s top pitching prospects. Hamm continued his summer of dominance on Tuesday by firing five shutout frames against Great Lakes, with just three hits allowed and seven strikeouts mixed in. The outing tied his season-high for strikeouts, which he had set three previous times this year.

Travis Sykora, RHP, Nationals: All season long, Sykora has brought the heat. The native Texan was on his A-game on Tuesday, when he vexed Delmarva over five one-run innings. He struck out nine hitters on the day, setting a new career high. Sykora now has 56 strikeouts in 40.1 innings at Low-A.

Nick Yorke, 2B, Red Sox: These days, most of the ink in the Red Sox system goes to Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel and Roman Anthony. On Tuesday, an old friend re-inserted himself into the conversation. Infielder Nick Yorke, whom Boston selected in 2020, slammed two home runs in Triple-A Worcester’s drubbing of Syracuse. Moreover, both of Yorke’s home runs came off of Dom Hamel, one of the Mets’ finest pitching prospects.

How do the Brewers keep doing this?

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Luis Peña, SS, Brewers: We recently used this space to tell you about Brewers OF Jesus Made, perhaps the top breakout in the DSL so far this season. Milwaukee isn’t done. Between Made, Peña, shortstop Jorge Quintana and outfielder Jose Anderson, with Peña making a campaign to be the DSL Most Valuable Player. Hitting .486/.538/.700 in 78 plate appearances with five walks and just seven strikeouts, he’s fourth in DSL in OPS, with his mark the highest in the league for a 17-year-old. While his approach is aggressive and he might need to become more selective as he moves through the minors, his hand-eye coordination and flat swing path from the right side results in a low swing-and-miss rate.

At 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, Peña isn’t that tall, but he’s strong and explosive, with twitch that shows up in his bat speed, helps him drive the ball with authority and presents the potential for plus raw power. He’s an explosive runner too, with plus-plus speed that has translated to 23 stolen bases in 25 attempts through 19 games. He has a plus arm as well, though on defense it’s more his tools and raw athleticism that stands out than his actions. He should get a chance to develop at shortstop, but there’s a chance he could end up at third base.
