Monday Was Moving Day For Top Prospects

Plus: Kevin McGonigle's Excellent Season May Be Over

It was a very big day for promotions as two Top 100 Prospects got the call to the majors, and a great story also made his MLB debut. Today is also Prospect Hot Sheet day, so you can see which prospects stood out over the past week.

Junior Caminero

Prospect Standouts

Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays: The Rays are calling up Junior Caminero, the team’s top prospect, to join the big league club on Tuesday, according to Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin. This will be Caminero’s second stint in the majors, as he was a late-season callup last year and made the postseason roster. Caminero’s 2024 season has been significantly slowed by a quad strain that led to two different stints on the injured list. He’s healthy now and has hit .350/.366/.600 with three home runs in nine games this month. Caminero is hitting .274/.337/.521 overall this year. We also looked at what to expect from Caminero in this video.

Kevin McGonigle, SS, Tigers: High-A West Michigan shortstop Kevin McGonigle’s 2024 season likely has come to an early end as he’s been placed on the injured list with a hamate (hand) injury, the Whitecaps announced. West Michigan’s season ends on Sept. 8, which makes it unlikely that McGonigle will get back on the field before the season ends, but the Top 100 Prospect has had an excellent first full pro season. McGonigle hit .309/.401/.452 between Low-A Lakeland and West Michigan, although most of his damage was done with the Flying Tigers. He’d hit .214/.368/.357 in 14 games since he got the promotion to High-A.

Mickey Gasper, C/1B, Red Sox: After hitting .246/.361/.375 between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023, the Yankees left catcher Mickey Gasper unprotected in the MiLB phase of the Rule 5 draft. That means he was left off the 40-man MLB roster as well as the 38-man Triple-A roster. Less than a year later, he’s a big leaguer. The Red Sox picked Gasper with the 12th pick in the first round of the 2023 MiLB Rule 5 draft. He hit .282/.403/.458 for Double-A Portland, earning a promotion to Triple-A Worcester. He found another gear at Worcester, as he hit .401/.515/.664 with eight home runs and 12 doubles in 40 games. Gasper is currently fourth in the minors in batting average (.341), leads the minors in on-base percentage (.458) and is 12th in the minors in slugging percentage (.559). He’s likely more of a first base/DH in Boston than a regular catcher, but the switch-hitter has emerged as one of the surprise stories of the 2024 season, as a 28-year-old.

Zebby Matthews, RHP, Twins: The Twins' Zebby Matthews is arguably the breakout pitching prospect of the 2024 season in the minor leagues and the Twins have seen enough. On Monday morning the Twins promoted Matthews to the major leagues, as the righthander should make his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Royals. First reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Matthews ranks No. 61 on the Top 100 Prospects rankings. He brings a combination of plus stuff and plus command to the table. Matthews mixes five pitches led by his mid-90s fastball with ride and arm side run, showing four secondaries in a low-90s cutter, mid-80s gyro slider, a low-80s two-plane curveball and a changeup. Eli Ben-Porat covered Matthews standout stuff this week in his Statcast Standouts article, and he was highlighted as one of eight prospects who could be a late-season callup to provide a boost.

What To Expect From Junior Caminero

Geoff Pontes and JJ Cooper take a look at what Rays fans can expect now that 3B Junior Caminero is headed back to the majors.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Keeler Morfe, RHP, Orioles: Morfe signed with the Orioles in 2023, when his fastball was already bumping 95 mph as a 16-year-old. Until this past week, he’d spent his entire career in the Dominican Summer League. This year, he was one of the best pitching prospects on the circuit, having struck out 38 hitters in 22 innings. In that span, he allowed just 11 hits and walked eight. This past week, Baltimore moved Morfe to Low-A for a spectacular debut.
