Plus: A star-studded list of weekend prospects and a BAPR scheduling note for the rest of the week.
We hope you’re enjoying the Baseball America Prospect Report! Please note we’re taking some time off later in the week. The BAPR will not be sent on Thursday, July 4 or Friday, July 5. The Prospect Wire will remain periodically updated throughout the back half of the week. We’ll return to daily morning updates next Monday.
Prospect Standouts
Quinn Mathews, LHP, Cardinals: Making his first start for Double-A Springfield, Cardinals lefthander Quinn Mathews was once again in complete control. He allowed just one hit in five innings. Mathews retired the first seven batters he faced and faced the minimum through 4.2 innings. He walked Victor Labrada with two outs in the fifth. Labrada then stole second and scored when Mathews committed a throwing error while trying to retire Jack Anchia on a comebacker to the mound. That was ruled a single, which was the only hit of the night Mathews allowed. Mathews also was charged with an unearned run in the sixth as Ben Williamson reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jeremy Rivas, stole second and eventually scored on a single by Harry Ford off reliever Ryan Shreve. Mathews is now 6-2, 2.03 between stops at Low-A Palm Beach, High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield.
Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: Spencer Jones is heating up. The Double-A Somerset outfielder went 4-for-5 with two home runs on Sunday. It wrapped up a month where he hit .296/.355/.546 with six home runs in 26 games. Jones had hit only three home runs in 38 games before this month. This was the second four-hit game of Jones’ pro career as well as his third two home run game.
Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates: High-A Greensboro shortstop/second baseman Termarr Johnson is wrapping up a month that is much more in line with what was expected from the 2022 first-rounder, who was viewed as one of the best pure hitters in not just that draft class, but one of the best in years. Johnson went 4-for-6 with a double on Saturday. He’s hitting .270/.380/.438 this month, raising his overall slash line to .225/.381/.365.
Elijah Green, OF, Nationals: In a second year at Low-A Fredericksburg, outfielder Elijah Green has continued to struggle. But Saturday was a nice bright spot, as Green hit a pair of home runs to right field. Green now has seven home runs this season. Overall he’s hitting .173/.266/.288.
Jacob Wilson, SS, Athletics: Fresh off of the injured list, A’s top prospect Jacob Wilson has emphatically shown he’s back. Wilson went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored, four RBIs and a walk. He’s now 9-for-18 since he returned to Las Vegas. His season has been interrupted by a knee injury, but the 2023 first-rounder’s stats are hard to believe. He’s hitting .458/.494/.694 in 156 plate appearances between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas with a brief injury rehab stint in the Arizona Complex League also included. He’s hitting .429/.478/.629 for Las Vegas and .455/.473/.705 at Double-A. His contact skills are also exceptional. He’s struck out in just 8.3% of plate appearances.
The Prospect Wire has additional updates on Lazaro Montes, Emiliano Teodo, Deyvison De Los Santos and others from the weekend. Check it out below.
Statcast Standouts To Know On July 1, 2024
Coby Mayo, Jackson Holliday Headline 10 Statcast Standouts
Last week, both of our headliners got promotions to the big leagues, which is always a nice coincidence. This week, we’ll be discussing:
Three of MLB’s top 20 prospects
Two underrated catchers
A massively undervalued Rays hitter
The next great closing prospect?
Coby Mayo is the headliner, and for good reason. Eli Ben-Porat dives deep and wonders whether there’s another prospect in the minors who makes as much contact with this much power and also hits the ball in the air this frequently. It’s a great breakdown, and it’s free for all to read.
There’s a new No. 1 DSL prospect in RoboScout…
Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Juneiker Caceres, OF, Guardians: The 16-year-old Guardians outfield prospect is RoboScout’s new No. 1 prospect in the DSL. The lefthanded-hitting Venezuelan pairs solid swing decisions with impressive exit velocities, especially for one of the youngest hitters in the league. HIs combination of hit tool and underlying power is above league average. Add in that he doesn’t turn 17 for another six weeks, and that puts him at the top of RoboScout’s DSL list. That doesn’t even consider that Caceres has been preventing runs at a better-than-minor-league average rate.
In case you missed it…
Happy James Wood day!
