Leodalis De Vries, Samuel Basallo Headline Friday BAPR

Plus: Trade analysis on both the Randy Arozarena & A.J. Puk deals

Two of baseball’s brightest teenage prospects enjoy strong Thursday showings, plus the trade market is heating up and we have analysis on every player involved in both the A.J. Puk and Randy Arozarena deals.

Prospect Standouts

Roderick Arias, SS, Yankees: In 2023, Arias was one of the brightest stars on an FCL Yankees club chock full of them. This year has been a bit more of a struggle. On Thursday, however, he gave fans at Steinbrenner Field a reminder of his ceiling. In one half of his team’s doubleheader against Clearwater, Arias clubbed a double and a grand slam, his seventh home run of the year. The home run left the bat at 106.4 mph and traveled an estimated 358 feet.

Leodalis De Vries, SS, Padres: De Vries signed in January, then was skipped over both the Dominican Summer and Arizona Complex leagues and was sent directly to the Low-A California League. After a few months to warm up, he’s found his groove in a big way. On Thursday, he crushed his ninth home run of the year in Lake Elsinore’s game against Visalia. After the evening, De Vries, who is just 17 years old, is slashing .318/.430/.712 with seven home runs in July.

Samuel Basallo, C, Orioles: Samuel Basallo is one of the brightest young catching prospects in the game. On Thursday, he put his power on display again. The 19-year-old connected on his 13th home run of the season, giving him 28 extra-base hits on the season. July in particular has been excellent for Basallo. It was his second home run of the month.

Jeter Martinez, RHP, Mariners: Martinez is one of the best pitching prospects in the Arizona Complex League. He needs to throw more strikes, but his raw stuff gives him an intriguing ceiling. On Thursday, the closing day in the ACL, he turned in one of his best starts of the year. Facing the White Sox’s affiliate, he struck out eight hitters in four shutout innings, giving him 49 strikeouts in 39.1 innings for the year.

Deyvison De Los Santos, 1B & Andrew Pintar, 2B/OF, Marlins: The Marlins and D-backs swung a deal late Thursday night, as Miami sent lefty A.J. Puk to Arizona in exchange for 1B Deyvison De Los Santos and 2B/OF Andrew Pintar. De Los Santos was set to rank eighth while Pintar would’ve ranked 21st in our next Arizona Top 30 update. Both were tabbed as midseason risers in our last update in early July. De Los Santos, who was originally claimed by the Guardians this winter in the Rule 5 Draft before being offered back this spring, is a corner masher. Pintar has seen his power tick up — and walk rate decline — this year as well. You can read more about every player in the deal here.

AROZARENA HEADS TO SEATTLE

Mariners Land Randy Arozarena In Exchange For 2 Prospects, PTBNL

The Mariners have one of the best pitching staffs in the sport. In the early morning hours of July 26, they made a move to add some offense and give those arms some support. In exchange for a pair of minor leaguers in outfielder Aidan Smith and righthander Brody Hopkins, as well as a player to be named later, Seattle pried Randy Arozarena—one of October’s most potent sluggers—away from the Rays. You can see new reports on both Smith and Hopkins below.

THERE’S A NEW NO. 1 IN OUR TRANSFER PORTAL RANKINGS

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Aiva Arquette, 2B: Every once in a while, we like to use this space to gaze ahead to the next wave of prospects entering pro ball. Arquette is a name to file away. The former Washington shortstop entered the portal after his head coach jumped to Texas A&M to take the Aggies’ pitching coach position. The middle infielder broke out this spring, has above-average power and is one of the most coveted underclass bats remaining on the transfer market. He now ranks No. 1 in our updated transfer portal rankings below.
