Prospect Standouts

Leodalis De Vries, SS, Padres: It sounds like it’s going to be a notable summer for Padres top 2024 international signee Leodalis De Vries. After a two-hit game on Wednesday with Low-A Lake Elsinore, De Vries followed that up with another two-hit game on Thursday while collecting the first four RBIs of his career. De Vries hit his first career triple in the third inning, giving him consecutive games with extra-base hits. Over the first three games of his career the reports on De Vries have been loud. Much like Padres top 2023 international signee Ethan Salas rocketed up ranks, there should be a similar climb up rankings for De Vries this season.

Tyler Stuart, RHP, Mets: The 6-foot-9 Stuart only struck out six batters over his first 9.2 innings of the year. On Thursday, Stuart found his swing and miss stuff, striking out a dozen New Hampshire batters for Double-A Binghamton. The Mets prospect generated 16 swinging strikes eclipsing his total from his first two starts. Stuart gets around 6-foot-8 feet of extension mixing two fastballs sitting 92-94 mph with a low-to-mid-80s slider and a changeup.

Jackson Jobe, RHP, Tigers: Jackson Jobe enjoyed his best start of 2024 on Thursday with Double-A Erie, tossing four no-hit innings allowing one walk and striking out six. Jobe generated 12 swinging strikes, matching his season high set in his previous start. Jobe entered the season as one of the top pitching prospects in the game alongside the Pirates Paul Skenes. Jobe’s start to his season has been a little underwhelming over his first few starts, but Thursday’s performance was a step in the right direction.

Kyle Manzardo, 1B, Guardians: Almost no one on the planet is hotter than Kyle Manzardo over the last week. After slugging four home runs over three games from Saturday to Tuesday, Manzardo had his third three-hit game over his last six contests on Thursday for Triple-A Columbus. While Manzardo’s homer streak ended in his 0-for-3 showing on Wednesday, he’s continued to hit the ball hard. In Thursday’s game, Manzardo had two more hard-hit balls in play, showing the continue progression of his power hitting.

Orelvis Martinez, 2B, Blue Jays: For the second week in a row, it’s nearly impossible to get Orelvis Martinez out. In Buffalo’s doubleheader yesterday Martinez went 3-for-7 with three runs, four RBI and a fourth-inning home run. The home run left the bat at 109.7 mph and traveled 414 feet to left-center field. Dating back to his first full professional season, Orelvis has shown easy plus power, but over the last few seasons his approach has improved by leaps and bounds. After the callup of Addison Barger, Martinez is next in line for Blue Jays should an injury occur in the infield.

Matt Wilkinson, RHP, Guardians: Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson struck out 15 in his start on Thursday night for Low-A Lynchburg. The Guardians prospect opened the game retiring the first 10 batters he faced before walking Reggie Preciado. He then retired the next eight batters he faced to finish his outing. Williamson mixes three pitches in a four-seam fastball from a lower release height, a slider and a changeup. He generated 20 swinging strikes for the second consecutive start on Thursday. Williamson first popped onto the scene in the 2015 Little League World Series when he struck out 16 batters in a start against Mexico.

A Rising Draft Prospect To Know

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Theodore Gillen, SS, Westlake HS (TX): We typically reserve this space for pro prospects, but today we’re examining a rising prep hitter following the release of our latest mock draft and draft rankings. Gillen has been surging up boards this spring thanks to his tremendous hitting ability. Some scouts think he’s one of the best hitters in the state and the class as a whole. His track record as an underclassman would back that up. Gillen has a track record of injuries which could complicate his draft stock. He also might not be a shortstop in the long run. He’s a plus runner who could perhaps slide over to second or move to center field, but the team who drafts him will certainly be taking him for his hitting chops and power potential. He’s had plenty of decision-makers running in to see him this spring. You can see our full BA 400 draft rankings below.
