Leodalis De Vries' 2024 Season Could Be Over

Plus: Kristian Campbell earns a promotion to Triple-A, Joe Boyle dominates the Rays & more.

Leodalis De Vries electrified the Low-A California League in recent weeks, clearly earning the attention of league managers in our annual Best Tools survey. Unfortunately, a right shoulder strain will sideline the 17-year-old shortstop for the next few weeks. Elsewhere, Kristian Campbell, Joe Boyle and Adrian Del Castillo are among the prospects catching our attention.

Prospect Standouts

Eduardo Beltre, OF, Twins: Beltre’s excellent season just keeps getting better. Beltre went 3-for-5 with a double and his 11th home run in just 42 games on Monday. It was his second three-hit game in the past three games, and he’s hitting .353 this month. Beltre is hitting .336/.460/.636 overall this year. He’s second in the DSL in home runs and is top 10 in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS.

Joe Boyle, RHP, Athletics: Whenever Boyle has average MLB control, he can dominate. After struggling to find the strike zone for much of the year, Boyle is on an exceptional (for him) run of success at throwing strikes. The results are falling right in line. Boyle threw strikes with 63% of his pitches on Monday, walking three in six scoreless innings in a 3-0 win against the Rays. Boyle allowed just two hits while striking out six. He sat at 98-99 mph and touched 100.8 mph. Boyle has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his past eight starts between Triple-A Las Vegas and Oakland. Boyle also exhausted his prospect eligibility in Monday’s start and now has 53.2 big league innings on his ledger.

Julian Aguiar, RHP, Reds: Aguiar allowed two runs and four hits in four innings of work in his MLB debut as Cincinnati’s starter on Monday. Aguiar left with the game tied 2-2, and then the Reds scored four runs in the sixth to pull away for the win against the Blue Jays. Aguiar, the Reds’ No. 9 prospect, sat at 93-94 mph with his fastball and used his changeup more often than usual.

Adrian Del Castillo, C, D-backs: Del Castillo has had an excellent breakout season in the minors in 2024, and he’s carried that over to a remarkable MLB debut as well. Del Castillo hit a grand slam in the third inning of Arizona’s 9-6 win over Miami and then added a two-RBI single later as well as his first MLB stolen base. Del Castillo has three home runs and two doubles in five MLB games. Del Castillo is hitting .333/.405/.667.

Leodalis De Vries, SS, Padres: De Vries is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a shoulder strain, according to San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Jeff Sanders. With the Low-A California League season scheduled for only three more weeks, that means De Vries’ season is likely over. De Vries struggled early this season as the youngest player in the California League, but he hit .318/.442/.694 in July and was hitting a solid .232/.353/.429 in August. Overall, De Vries is hitting .237/.361/.441.

Kristian Campbell, 2B/OF, Red Sox: The “Big Three” have become the “Big Four.” The Red Sox promoted Campbell to Triple-A Worcester, where he will join the recently promoted Kyle Teel and Roman Anthony (as well as Marcelo Mayer who is sidelined by injury and hasn’t played since the end of July). Campbell hit .362/.463/.582 at Double-A Portland and is hitting .339/.444/.572 overall this year with 30 doubles and 16 home runs. His 1.016 OPS is best in the minors this year.

10 Statcast Standouts From The Past Week

Eli Ben-Porat’s Statcast Standouts feature is on a bit of a hot streak.

Last week, we took a trip down memory lane and discussed the House of Radke and how Zebby Matthews appears to be an evolved version of the Twins’ penchant for developing pitchers who don’t walk anyone. We also discussed the very exciting Bubba Chandler, who stuck out 11 batters on Friday.

This week, he returns with two more interesting pitchers atop the list, while also checking in on Jasson Dominguez, Kyle Teel, Agustin Ramirez and others. His player breakdowns are available exclusively for Baseball America subscribers below.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Cole Carrigg, OF, Rockies: Colorado’s 2023 second-rounder can do many things on a baseball field, starting games at every position except for first base in college. His versatility was one of his selling points on draft day. But Carrigg has settled into more regular role in center field this year and has blossomed, earning attention in our annual Best Tools balloting this summer. Baseball America’s Geoff Pontes has more below.

In Case You Missed It

Jaison Chourio is killing it this year.
