Kristian Campbell Set To Open 2025 In Boston
Plus: Drew Thorpe's injury, Kevin McGonigle's no-doubt home run and plenty more.

Kristian Campbell, 2B, Red Sox: The No. 4 prospect on Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects has made the Red Sox Opening Day roster. The news was first reported by Ari Alexander. Campbell is expected to be the team's primary second baseman. He has played more innings at second base this spring than any other Red Sox. David Hamilton, the other option, bats lefthanded, which makes him a less-than-ideal fit in a lefty-heavy lineup. Campbell is not having an exceptional spring. He's hitting .167/.305/.271 with 18 strikeouts in 59 plate appearances (30.5%).
Mickey Gasper, UTIL, Twins: The injuries to Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis have created a potential opening for rookie Mickey Gasper, and the catcher/first baseman/second baseman is doing his best to claim the job. Gasper homered in his only at-bat on Sunday, raising his slash line to .308/.417/.487 this spring. Minnesota acquired Gasper from the Red Sox this offseason in a trade for lefthander Jovani Moran. A MiLB Rule 5 pick by the Red Sox, Gasper had a breakout season in 2024, hitting .328/.439/.531 with 27 doubles and 12 home runs between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He’s not viewed as more than a third catcher defensively, but he has shown his ability to play second (where he has made seven starts) in addition to being a switch-hitting first baseman/reserve catcher.
Kevin McGonigle, SS, Tigers: It’s hard to make a much better impression than McGonigle is making this spring. The team’s No. 3 prospect continued an excellent spring training by going 1-for-2 with a walk on Sunday. He hit a no-doubt home run to right field off Aaron Nola to lead off the third inning. The homer was measured at 111.3 mph and was estimated to travel 406 feet. McGonigle is 4-for-7 over his past five games with the big league club and is hitting .400/.538/.800 overall this spring in 13 plate appearances.

Alexander Canario, OF, Mets: When the Mets acquired Canario from the Cubs last month for cash considerations, they did so knowing that they were taking a flier on a prospect who would have a tough time making the Opening Day roster. Canario is out of options, so if the Mets don’t keep him on the 26-man active roster, they will have to place him on waivers. Canario’s path to a big league job remains tenuous if Starling Marte is healthy and able to play the outfield (something he’s done just once this spring as he recovers from a sore knee). But Canario is making his best possible case. The outfielder went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs on Sunday. He’s now hitting .314/.429/.629 with five extra base hits (2 doubles, 3 home runs) in 42 plate appearances.
Drew Thorpe, RHP, White Sox: Thorpe’s 2025 season ended before it got started. The team announce that he will have Tommy John surgery that will sideline him until some time in the 2026 season. Slated to be part of the team’s starting rotation, Thorpe’s 2024 season ended early with what was described at the time as a flexor strain. He then had surgery to shave a bone spur in his pitching elbow. But this spring he had yet to pitch in an official game. In his lone MiLB appearance he felt elbow discomfort that eventually led to the decision to have surgery.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.
Enrique Bradfield, OF, Orioles: With a crowded outfield, the Orioles haven’t given Bradfield a lot of playing time with the MLB team this spring. He got three plate appearances after entering as a pinch runner on Feb. 22, and he got a start on March 17, but otherwise he’s gotten a plate appearance here and there. But what was most surprising was Bradfield entered Saturday’s game (March 22) 0-for-1 on stolen base attempts. He rectified that against the Pirates, showing off his top-of-the-scale speed. Bradfield was inserted as a pinch runner in the seventh after Ramon Laureano was hit by a pitch. He stole second and third, and then scored on a Dylan Carlson single. Two innings later, he walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly. Bradfield is hitting .222/.462/.556 this spring. He walked three times in 13 plate appearances and was hit by a pitch.
