Josue Briceño's Remarkable AFL In Context

Plus: New Pirates rankings today at Baseball America.

Josue Briceño, 1B, Tigers: In the closing days of the Arizona Fall League, Briceño reached ground untouched since 2011. Facing Peoria, the first baseman crushed his 10th AFL home run as part of a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of walks. In doing so, Briceño became the first Fall League player to reach double-digit home runs since Mike Olt clubbed 13 in 2011, one short of the AFL record set by Brandon Wood in 2005.

Other AFLers to hit 10 or more home runs in the league include
Grant Desme (11 in 2009)
Tyler Flowers (12 in 2008)
Chip Cannon (11 in 2006)
Tagg Bozied (12 in 2002)
Hank Blalock (11 in 2001)
George Lombard (11 in 1999)
Ron Wright (11 in 1997)
Bobby Higginson (10 in 1994)
J.R. Phillips (11 in 1993)

Tommy Troy, SS, D-backs: The D-backs’ 2023 first-rounder missed much of his first full season as a pro on the injured list. Now, he’s making up at-bats in the Arizona Fall League. On Wednesday, Troy swatted his third home run of the fall. The blast came as part of a 2-for-3 day which also included a pair of walks and two runs scored. It traveled an estimated 403 feet.

Bo Davidson, OF, Giants: Davidson was one of the best stories from the 2024 Giants farm system. The undrafted free agent scorched baseballs on a regular basis in Low-A. About the only thing that stopped him was a trip to the injured list after dropping a weight on his foot during a workout. He’s making up the missed time in the Fall League, and on Wednesday he put together his best performance of the six-week season. Against Peoria, he went 2-for-5 with a triple and a home run, each of which were his first of Fall League. The home run was a seventh-inning grand slam to double the Scorpions’ score.
