Jasson Dominguez Heats Up

Plus: Jack Leiter, Carson Williams and other Sunday standouts to know.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees: After a slow start, Dominguez has heated up. He homered off of Kevin Kelly on Sunday. Dominguez has now homered twice and tripled in his past three games. He’s hitting .256/.289/.512. With Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu sidelined with injuries, the Yankees need Dominguez to take on a larger role in the team’s lineup, and these past few games are a positive sign.

Jack Leiter, RHP, Rangers: It wasn’t his cleanest outing, but Leiter continued to make his case for a spot in the team’s starting rotation on Sunday. Leiter allowed four hits and two runs in four innings in his longest outing this spring. He walked three and struck out four. Home runs have been a persistent problem for Leiter in his pro career, but he’s allowed just one in 14.2 innings this spring. He sat at 98 mph with his four-seamer and sinker and touched 100 (99.8 mph). His improved changeup and slider were also impressive.

Carson Williams, SS, Rays: In two MLB games sandwiching his Spring Breakout appearance, Williams went 0-for-7 with five strikeouts. But Williams put that mini-slump behind him on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Williams is now hitting .281/.343/.406. Williams is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Durham after a very solid season for Double-A Montgomery in 2024.

Jordan Lawlar, SS, D-backs: Lawlar doesn’t have a clear path to a big league job this spring without an injury, but that hasn’t kept him from producing. Lawlar went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI on Sunday, raising his slash line to .323/.400/.581. After playing shortstop earlier in the spring, Lawlar has been playing third base exclusively since March 8. With Eugenio Suarez in the final year of his deal, that could be Lawlar’s long-term fit in Phoenix.

Charlie Condon, 3B/OF, Rockies: Condon suffered a non-displaced left wrist fracture when attempting to make a diving catch in a spring training MiLB game. The diagnosis shows no ligament damage and the Rockies say the injury will not require surgery. He will wear a split for four weeks and should be able to resume baseball activity in about six weeks.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.

Jake Mangum, OF, Rays: It’s hard to see how Mangum could crack the Rays’ Opening Day roster, but the 29-year-old switch-hitter is doing everything he can to make that a tough decision. Mangum homered twice on Sunday, and is now hitting .462/.500/.808 in 29 plate appearances this spring. Mangum has played all three outfield spots and is coming off of a .317/.357/.442 2024 season at Triple-A Durham. The Rays added him to the 40-man roster in the offseason, so he’s very much in the team’s short-term plans, but with José Caballero and Richie Palacios ticketed to be multi-position backups and Curtis Mead hitting enough to fill another backup role, Mangum will likely need to spend a bit more time in Durham waiting for an opportunity.
