Prospect Standouts

Tyler Locklear, 1B, Mariners: Locklear was called up to the big leagues to fill in for an ailing Ty France. In his MLB debut, Locklear went 1-for-4 with a double, driving in a run in the seventh inning to tie the game in what eventually proved to be a 6-5 extra-inning win for the Mariners. Locklear had just gotten to Triple-A Tacoma a couple of weeks ago after starting the season at Double-A Arkansas. He’s hitting .293/.404/.520 overall in the minors.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees: Dominguez homered as part of a four-hit day on Sunday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 4-for-5 with his sixth home run in just 19 games this season. Dominguez is hitting .380/.429/.680 overall and is 10-for-17 in his last four games. You can read more about Dominguez below.

Edgar Quero, C, White Sox: In May, Quero had 15 hits in 90 at-bats. In June, he has 17 hits in 29 at-bats. That torrid stretch continued on Sunday when he doubled and homered in Double-A Birmingham’s win over Tennessee. The blast gave Quero 10 home runs for the season, four more than he hit in all of 2023, which he split between the Angels’ and White Sox’s Double-A affiliates in the Southern League. With the home run, Quero is now one of four catchers 21 years old or younger with double-digit longballs on the season, joining the Marlins’ Joe Mack and Baltimore backstops Aneudis Mordan and Samuel Basallo.

Zebby Matthews, RHP, Twins: One of the newest additions to Baseball America’s Top 100, Matthews has been outstanding this season. Actually, that might be selling him short. He’s been phenomenal. He’s been stupendous. He’s been unbelievable. And Sunday’s outing was no different. Facing Northwest Arkansas, Matthews went seven shutout innings, allowed just three hits and struck out eight. He walked nobody, marking the seventh time this season he’s made it through an outing without allowing a walk. For the year, Matthews has racked up 63 strikeouts against just two walks.

William Bergolla Jr., 2B, Phillies: After skipping the Florida Complex League last year, Bergolla Jr. more than held his own in the Florida State League. This year, he’s moved up to High-A Jersey Shore and has begun to turn his season around after a slow start in April. He collected five hits on Sunday in his team’s rout of Greensboro—Bergolla himself had as many hits as the Grasshoppers—including his eighth double of the season. Since May 1, the 19-year-old is hitting .327/.382/.439 with just 15 strikeouts in 112 plate appearances.

Justin Crawford, OF, Phillies: Although his 2023 season was excellent, Crawford entered this year with one main goal: Get the ball in the air more often. Although he still would like to make more progress in that area, he has shown plenty of improvement. Crawford ended his week on a high note on Sunday with a 4-for-6 game with a double and a home run. All four of his hits were in the air, including extra-base hits to the opposite field. He’s hitting .293 this year with a .765 OPS in 2024.

Jasson Dominguez Headlines 10 Statcast Standouts

Each Monday, we look at several players with impressive Statcast data from the previous week of action. Today, we’re starting with Jasson Dominguez, who has arrived in Triple-A with glorious launch parameters. In the early going, the top Yankees prospect is showing plus raw power, an improvement in key exit velocity metrics and a better ability to tap into his power so far in 2024.

Dominguez isn’t the only notable name. Eli Ben-Porat also examines a pure hitter in the Red Sox system, a deeper dive into Tyler Locklear and more.

Keep an eye on a young Pirates catcher with big power…

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Axiel Plaz, C, Pirates: Plaz has now popped up in two of our weekly data-oriented features, even despite an unassuming slash line with Low-A Bradenton. Plaz has been on our radar since he cracked the Pirates’ preseason list entering the 2023 season. Our aforementioned Statcast Standouts series likes what it sees from him so far in 2024. So does Dylan White’s RoboScout tool, which notes Plaz already has three balls in play over 109 mph this season. The only players in their age-18 season that have a higher 90th percentile exit velocity than the Pirates catcher are Robert Calaz (Rockies), George Wolkow (White Sox), and Camilo Diaz (Astros). Plaz has a better contact rate, in-zone contact rate, and chase rate than all of them.

Baseball America subscribers have access to RoboScout’s weekly insights, which drop every Sunday afternoon. You can see the full ranking of the top prospects at every level below.
