James Wood Extends Hit Streak To Five Games

Plus: Colt Emerson heads to High-A and David Festa settles in against the Cubs.

Today’s prospect report features four standouts from a lighter slate last night, plus a look at today’s Hot Sheet and a helium pick in the Twins system. We’re also chatting prospects today at 2 p.m. ET. Please note we are experience issues displaying stats from last night’s slate of games and are working to fix the issue. Prospect Standouts

Ky Bush, LHP, White Sox: There aren’t many bright spots right now for the White Sox. They lost their 21st consecutive game last night, tying an American League record. But Bush offered at least a glimmer for fans looking toward the future, even if Chicago’s No. 6 prospect took the loss in his big league debut, allowing three runs over four innings. Bush struggled with his command and walked five batters compared to just three strikeouts. The 24-year-old lefthander has been quite solid in the upper minors this year, pitching to a 2.89 ERA with 94 strikeouts across 99.2 innings. He mostly relied on his 92-93 mph fastball and 83 mph slider Monday, sprinkling in his 87 mph changeup against righties. The White Sox acquired Bush from the Angels last season alongside Edgar Quero in the Lucas Giolito trade.

David Festa, RHP, Twins: Festa threw five shutout innings against the Cubs on Monday night in Minnesota’s 3-0 win. That’s easily his best start of his young MLB career, as he lowered his ERA from 6.98 to 5.55. Festa got seven swings and misses on his changeup and five more with his slider.

James Wood, OF, Nationals: Wood went 1-for-3 with a walk on Monday, extending his current hit streak to five games. Wood currently has a 10-game on-base streak as he’s raised his batting average from .200 to .259 and his on-base percentage from .273 to .346 over the past 10 games. Wood’s power hasn’t played in games all that much so far. He’s slugging .375. He’s hitting the ball extremely hard. His 93.5 mph average exit velocity is 11th best among the 431 MLB hitters with 50+ batted balls, but he’s hitting a lot of ground balls so far.

Colt Emerson, SS, Mariners: The Mariners’ top prospect is moving up. Despite missing a chunk of time with an injury which ultimately limited his time with Low-A Modesto to just 40 games this season, Emerson has proved himself enough to earn a bump to High-A Everett. Emerson, who was Seattle’s first-round pick in 2023 out of high school in Ohio, also played 16 games in the regular season last year, as well as the California League playoffs with Modesto. In total, the shortstop hit .296/.439/.432 with three home runs across both seasons. He currently ranks as BA’s No. 14 prospect.

DODGERS RIGHTY RIPS THROUGH THE MINORS

Do The Dodgers Have The Next Orion Kerkering?

Last year, Orion Kerkering began the year in Low-A and ended it pitching significant innings in the Phillies’ bullpen during the postseason. The Dodgers have a pitcher tracking on a similar path. J.J. Cooper introduces Baseball America subscribers to a flamethrowing Dodgers righty who has been up to 103 mph this year out of the bullpen.

TWINS OF IMPRESSES IN THE DSL

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Eduardo Beltre, OF, Twins: Beltre is one of the most impressive hitters in the Dominican Summer League this season. The 17-year-old outfielder signed for $1.5 million out of the Dominican Republic this past January. Beltre has shown impressive power and underlying power metrics in his professional debut, and in many ways compares to 2023 DSL standout and Rockies Top 10 Prospect Robert Calaz. His 102.6 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and .553 xwOBAcon showcase both his outlier power for age and level and his ability to make his best contact at strong angles. Beltre’s 57% hard hit rate and 61% combined line drive+flyball rate shows his ability to consistently elevate. He shows a knack for pull-side power, and enough athleticism to stick in the outfield
