Prospect Standouts

Santiago Suarez, RHP, Rays: After a rough month of May, Suarez has righted the ship in June. The former Marlins prospect punched out five hitters over six innings of two-hit shutout ball on Thursday while also getting 16 swings and misses, the most in Low-A yesterday. The effort follows a five-inning outing with 10 strikeouts on May 31 and brings his season total to 54 strikeouts against just four walks all year.

Braxton Ashcraft, RHP, Pirates: A year ago, Ashcraft reintroduced himself to the sport after missing the 2022 season with Tommy John surgery. This year, he’s making it loud and clear that he’s one of the best prospects in the Pirates’ system. On Thursday he punched out a dozen Richmond hitters over the course of seven innings of four-run ball. His 22 whiffs were the most garnered by any Double-A pitcher on the evening. The outing was Ashcraft’s second with 10 or more strikeouts this season and brought his overall line to 63 strikeouts against just eight walks in 53.2 innings at Double-A.

Caleb Ricketts, C, Phillies: The Phillies have a wide swath of catching prospects bubbling at the lower levels of their system, and Ricketts was one of the buzzier players in the organization before an injury cut short his year. The backstop went deep twice on Thursday against Harrisburg, tripling his season home run total. He finished the night 2-for-5 with three RBIs and is hitting .290 on the year.

Jaison Chourio, OF, Guardians: The younger brother of Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio, Jaison has put together an excellent season so far as part of a stacked lineup at Low-A Lynchburg. He went off again on Thursday in the second game of the Hillcats’ doubleheader with Delmarva. In the nightcap, Chourio went 3-for-4 and finished a double shy of the cycle. The triple was his first of the season and the home run was his third on the year.

Johnathan Rodriguez, OF, Guardians: Rodriguez is one of the Guardians system’s most prodigious power brokers. He proved as much again on Thursday night by smashing three home runs in the Clippers’ 23-5 rout of Indianapolis. There was, however, a little bit of a catch. All of Rodriguez’s longballs came in the eighth and ninth innings, including two off of position players in the final frame. He finished the game 3-for-7 with nine RBIs and now has 10 homers on the season.

Top 100 Prospects Riser

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Kevin McGonigle, 2B, Tigers: A touted prep talent, McGonigle looks like one of the best day one picks in last year’s draft after slipping to the Tigers in the second round. He is an undersized spark plug with an all-out play style, strong makeup and a potentially even stronger hit tool. Among players in the lower minors, McGonigle’s bat-to-ball skills stand in elite company. He hit .342/.421/.487 with more walks (19) than strikeouts (17) for Low-A Lakeland through 31 games. McGonigle doesn’t have big power upside but he’s not deficient in that area either. He consistently hits the ball in the air, while showing an above-average 90th percentile exit velocity of 102.7 mph. He’s one of 12 new additions to the Top 100 this week, and you can see similar new reports on each player below.
