Prospect Standouts

Jackson Chourio, OF, Brewers & Jackson Merrill, OF, Padres: Chourio turned in one of the best performances of his young Brewers big league career Monday night, going 2-for-4 with a homer and a steal in a 7-3 loss to the Padres. Chourio’s 368-foot homer came off Joe Musgrove in the second inning and was one of his four hard-hit balls on the night. The outburst marked Chourio’s second multi-hit game this season and his first extra-base hit since April 6. He’s currently hitting .259/.305/.444. Not to be outdone, fellow 20-year-old Jackson Merrill notched three hits and drove in two runs to raise his average to .356 this year. Per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Monday’s game was only the fourth time since 1920 that two players under 21 notched multiple hits and RBIs in the same game

Mitchell Parker, LHP, Nationals: The first four batters Nationals lefthander Mitchell Parker faced in his MLB debut were Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith. Welcome to the big leagues, kid. Parker struck out Betts, but did allow singles to Ohtani and Freeman before Smith drove in Ohtani on a sacrifice fly. It may have seemed like a rocky start, but Parker settled in and allowed just two more hits and one more run over five innings to pick up a win over the Dodgers in his MLB debut. Parker worked five innings, allowing four hits, no walks and two runs while striking out four. He wasn’t overpowering–he got just one swing and miss all night with his low-90s fastball. But he was in the zone and effective.

Ben Brown, RHP, Cubs: With Jameson Taillon set to come of the injured list, it’s not clear whether Ben Brown will stay in the Cubs rotation, but he made his best case to keep starting with six solid innings against the D-backs. Brown allowed just one run in six innings, holding Arizona to one hit and two walks. He struck out four. In two starts since joining the rotation, Brown has allowed four hits and one run in 10.2 innings.

Michael Busch, 1B, Cubs: Cubs first baseman Michael Busch homered against the D-backs last night, giving him home runs in five straight games. It’s been an amazing week for Busch. He was hitting .257/.325/.400 just a week ago, and now he’s hitting .327/.410/.731.

Jonathan Cannon, RHP, White Sox: The White Sox are in the midst of a roster makeover, and part of its next wave of pitchers will get their first tastes of the big leagues this week. Righthander Nick Nastrini was slated to make his big league debut on April 15, and Jonathan Cannon was scheduled to follow a day later. Nastrini came to Chicago in the deal that sent Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn to Los Angeles. Cannon was the club’s third-rounder, out of Georgia, in the 2022 draft. The righthander works with a five-pitch complement that includes cut, two-seam and four-seam fastballs, as well as a slider and a changeup. Nastrini and Cannon are the team’s No. 3 and No. 8 prospects, respectively.

Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs: With Seiya Suzuki going on the injured list, the Cubs have summoned outfielder Alexander Canario as his replacement. The 23-year-old Canario was acquired by Chicago in 2021 along with Caleb Kilian as part of the two-player package used to import Kris Bryant from San Francisco. Canario made his big league debut in 2023 and hit one home run in 17 at-bats. He currently ranks as the Cubs’ No. 11 prospect.

A Twins Name To File Away…

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Luke Keaschall, 2B, Twins: Keaschall was featured prominently in BA’s recent spring training standouts, and he’s carried his backfield dominance into the regular season. The Arizona State alum moved up to High-A in 2024 and had himself a strong series against Dayton. He walloped two home runs—doubling his career total—walked six times and stole five bags, nearly halfway to the total he posted in 2023. Keaschall’s ceiling is as an offensive-minded infielder and is beginning to look like a smart pick for the Twins.
