Jackson Holliday And Heston Kjerstad Remain Scorching Hot
We wrote yesterday that Norfolk is the most talented team in the minors. Then, the Tides went out and scored 26 runs in one game.
Prospect Wire, powered by Louisville Slugger, is Baseball America’s new free home for in-season daily news, analysis and filterable season stats for every player ranked in a Top 30. Check that out here.
PROSPECT STANDOUTS
Heston Kjerstad, OF, Orioles: Norfolk scored 26 runs against Charlotte on Wednesday with the Orioles’ No. 5 prospect leading the way. Kjerstad hit two home runs and two doubles. He hit a three-run home run in the sixth and a grand slam in the eighth. The grand slam came against position player Danny Mendick, who threw two innings in the blowout loss. Kjerstad is up to four home runs over his first five games with a whopping 18 RBIs after the 10 RBI effort on Wednesday.
Jackson Holliday, 2B/SS, Orioles: Holliday notched his third multi-hit game through five games this season with his first four-hit game on Wednesday. Holliday reached base six times, scored five times and collected his first stolen base of the season in the blowout win against Charlotte. Holliday has now scored 12 times through five games. The No. 1 prospect in the game is 10-for-25 to begin the season with six extra base hits. It’s just a matter of when Holliday makes his big league debut.
Marco Luciano, SS, Giants: The Giants’ No. 2 prospect reached base four times with two doubles and his first stolen base of the season. Luciano hit three balls in play at 100 mph or above, including a 107.5 mph double in the second inning. These were Luciano’s first extra base hits of the season, but the shortstop has been hot to begin the year with multiple hits in each of his last three contests. Luciano disappointingly didn’t win the Giants shortstop job out of camp, but at 22 years old he has plenty of time to refine some of the more raw parts of his game.
Kyle Manzardo, 1B, Guardians: In his second game of the season, Manzardo collected his first hit and home run in Columbus’ 3-0 win over Omaha. Manzardo drove in all three runs for the Clippers kicking off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the third. Manzardo took a low 88 mph slider in the fifth to right-center field for a home run. The shot left the bat at 100.5 mph at a 28 degree launch angle.
Coby Mayo, 3B, Orioles: Mayo took part in the festivities on Wednesday in Norfolk’s 26-11 rout of Charlotte. Mayo hit three balls in play at 105 mph or above including a double at 112.3 mph and a triple at 107.6 mph. Mayo is 10-for-26 to open the season with four extra base hits. While the numbers have been good, Mayo has 10 strikeouts to zero walks.
Colson Montgomery, SS, White Sox: The White Sox No. 1 prospect was one of the few bright spots in the Charlotte Knights 26-11 drubbing at the hands of Norfolk. Montgomery went 3-for-6 with a double and a pair of singles. The 22-year-old Montgomery has hits in four of his first five Triple-A contests and Wednesday night marked his first multi-hit game.
TIGERS CATCHING PROSPECT TO KNOW
Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Josue Briceño, C, Tigers: The Tigers’ physical teenage catcher made noise in the Florida Complex League in 2023 hitting .325/.404/.550 with 7 home runs over 44 games. He saw a late-season promotion to Low-A Lakeland and heads back to the level to begin 2024. Briceño has legitimate plus power with the ability to elevate on his best contact. Briceño’s 103.3 mph 90th percentile exit velocity is well above the average for age and level. While his power is his carrying tool, he showed strong plate skills in 2023 with a 12.9% in-zone whiff rate and a 24.9% chase rate. Briceño should be one of the more exciting players to follow in the Florida State League as the publicly available Hawkeye data is likely to showcase Briceño’s eye-popping power. He’s one of the more popular names in our 2024 breakout prospect teams. You can find Geoff Pontes’ full roster below.
