Jack Leiter's MLB Struggles Continue

Plus: Weekend updates on Colt Emerson, Spencer Jones, Emmanuel Rodriguez & more.

We hope you spent the last long weekend of summer enjoying some down time. We kept the Prospect Wire humming throughout the weekend, so catch up on anything you may have missed below.

Jack Leiter, RHP, Rangers: In his fifth MLB start, Leiter worked into the sixth inning for the first time. But he was pulled in the sixth with a run in and two runners in scoring position with no outs. Both those runs scored, which meant Leiter allowed five runs in five innings. It’s a measure of how difficult his MLB time has been that this actually lowered his ERA to 11.78. Leiter walked no one and struck out two. He’s allowed more hits than innings pitched in all five MLB starts, and MLB hitters are hitting .360/.427/.593 against him.

Colt Emerson, SS, Mariners: Emerson went 3-for-5 on Monday with a double and a stolen base for High-A Everett. It was Emerson’s second three-hit game since his early August promotion to Everett. Since he’s returned from a foot injury, Emerson has struggled to get comfortable at the plate. He’s hitting .198/.325/.292 in 24 games at Everett.

Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: Jones went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple on Monday in Double-A Somerset’s win over Binghamton. While Jones did have an excellent day at the plate, it also came with his normal issue. Jones struck out the other two times, which was his fourth straight two-strikeout game. Jones has struck out 37% of the time this year, which is a number that needs to improve in 2025.

Franklin Arias, SS, Red Sox: Arias went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored on Monday for Low-A Salem, as he continued a hot streak to finish the season. Arias struggled early on after his promotion to the Carolina League. He was hitting .154/.241/.288 on Aug. 10, but he’s now hit safely in seven straight games and has raised his Low-A slash line to .252/.324/.366. Arias is hitting .310/.410/.488 overall this year.

Moises Ballesteros, C, Cubs: Triple-A Iowa catcher Moises Ballesteros remained red-hot, as he went 2-for-4 with a home run, his 19th of the season, against St. Paul. It was Ballesteros’ third straight multi-hit game and his sixth in the past nine games. Ballesteros is hitting .291/.362/.490 between stops at Double-A and Triple-A.

Emmanuel Rodriguez, OF, Twins: After a one-game rehab stint with Low-A Fort Myers, the Twins are promoting outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez to Triple-A St. Paul for his return to regular action. Rodriguez hit .298/.479/.621 for Double-A Wichita, but he’s been on the injured list since early June with a thumb injury. An earlier attempt to return in July was quickly shelved when he reaggravated the injury. Rodriguez has been excellent whenever he’s played. The move to Triple-A will not only give him a chance to get comfortable at the level he’s expected to start the 2025 season, but it will also allow him to get some additional work, as the Triple-A season extends a week beyond the Double-A season end.

RoboScout’s Top Prospects At Every Level

All of a sudden, less than 15% of the fantasy season remains. RoboScout continues to refine its algorithm and update its rankings as we barrel toward the conclusion of the 2024 season. This weekend’s update contextualizes Bryce Eldridge’s incredible month at the plate, and also delves into recent player development wins for the Rays, Phillies and Mariners.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Moises Chace, RHP, Phillies: Chace is one such breakout pitcher, even after changing organizations from the Orioles to the Phillies at the trade deadline. Philadelphia is letting Chace pitch deeper into games and his strikeout rate, ultra-flat four-seamer and Stuff+ grades all caught the attention of both RoboScout and our weekly Hot Sheet.
