Jack Leiter Dominates In Triple-A

Plus: Bryce Eldridge Hits A Pair Of Homers

It was a very big day for promotions as two Top 100 Prospects got the call to the majors, and a great story also made his MLB debut. Today is also Prospect Hot Sheet day, so you can see which prospects stood out over the past week.

Jack Leiter

Prospect Standouts

Bryce Eldridge, 1B, Giants: High-A Eugene first baseman Bryce Eldridge hit hits 15th and 16th home runs of the season on Thursday. Both home runs were no-doubters that easily cleared the fence. Eldridge yanked a ball down the right field line in the seventh inning. An inning later, he went deep to slightly right of dead center field. Eldridge is hitting .287/.373/.503 overall this year, but he’s been even better since he was promoted to High-A. Eldridge is hitting .325/.446/.545 for the Emeralds.

Nick Kurtz, 1B, A's: Four games into his pro career, Low-A Stockton first baseman Nick Kurtz has a four-game hitting streak. He went 1-for-3 with two walks on Thursday, hitting his second home run in those four games. Low-A seems to be little challenge for Kurtz so far. The A’s first-round pick is hitting .357/.526/.857 with more walks (5) than strikeouts (4).

Ryan Berget, RHP, Padres: Double-A San Antonio righthander Ryan Berget had the best start of his pro career. He threw six perfect innings, striking out nine Sod Poodles. Reliever Bradgley Rodriguez walked a batter with two outs in the seventh to blow the perfect game, and an error to start the eighth added another baserunner, but Rodriguez didn’t give up a hit. Ryan Och came in to throw 1.1 perfect innings of work to complete the no-hitter.

Jack Leiter, RHP, Rangers: Rangers righthander Jack Leiter struck out everyone on Thursday. Well, not quite, but the hyperbole isn’t much. Leiter got 11 outs against Albuquerque. All of them were strikeouts. The righthander finished his evening with 3.2 innings of one-hit, one-run ball with the 11 Ks and just one walk. Has fastball touched 100 three times and got 19 whiffs in 62 pitches. Nine of his whiffs came on his fastball, seven on his slider, two on his curveball and one on his cutter. He now has 101 Ks in 71.1 innings this year at Round Rock.

Hyun-Seok Jang, RHP, Dodgers: When he’s at his best, Dodgers righthander Hyun-Seok Jang has some of the nastiest stuff in the minor leagues. That was the case in the first game of the Arizona Complex League championship series the Diamondbacks, when Jang recorded eight strikeouts in three innings. Jang’s hex on Arizona affiliates continued on Thursday, when he struck out seven over three one-hit shutout frames. The outing was his second at Low-A, and should do wonders to erase the taste from his debut, when he allowed three earned runs over 1.1 innings.

Brody Hopkins, RHP, Rays: After a stellar beginning to his first full season as a pro, Brody Hopkins was traded to the Rays as part of the deal that brought Randy Arozarena to Seattle. On Thursday, in his third start with his new organization, he was outstanding. Facing Greensboro, Hopkins punched out eight hitters over six innings of four-hit, one-run ball. The outing extends a stellar August in which he’s struck out 19 hitters and walked three over 15.1 frames.

Mason Barnett, RHP, A's: After an impressive beginning to the season, Mason Barnett was one of the prospects the Royals used to help bolster their club at the deadline. He was sent to Oakland as part of the package that brought Lucas Erceg to Kansas City. On Thursday, he posted one of his best starts of the year. Facing Tulsa, Barnett spun seven innings of five-hit shutout ball. He struck out 10 and walked nobody. The outing was his longest of the season, tied a season high for strikeouts and was his first start since June 6 without a walk.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Eric Bitoni, 3B, Brewers: The Brewers selected Bitonti out of high school in 2023 then gave him a 12-game cameo in the Arizona Complex League to begin his career. He returned to the level in 2024 and was one of the league’s best offensive performers before moving to Low-A Carolina. Scouts have seen improvements year over year, specifically when it comes to controlling the strike zone.
