Prospect Standouts

Leodalis De Vries, SS, Padres: The Padres signed De Vries on Jan. 15, 2024, the first day of the current international free agency period. They bumped him over both the DSL and the Arizona Complex League and instead sent him to Low-A Lake Elsinore after a brief stint in extended spring training. His season has featured ups and downs, but on Tuesday he reached a milestone by hitting his first professional home run. The bomb came with one on in the seventh inning against Rancho Cucamonga and gave his team its margin of victory.

Emil Morales, SS, Dodgers: Morales, who signed with Los Angeles on Jan. 15, hit his first pro home run on Tuesday in his DSL. He enjoyed the experience so much that he did it again four innings later. The two home runs were part of a 3-for-3 day that also included a double and two walks as part of his team’s win over Astros Orange.

Hogan Windish, 1B, Mariners: No matter how the rest of his career goes, Windish will always remember what he did on June 25, 2024. Facing Springfield, the Mariners prospect went 4-for-4 with nine RBIs. All of his hits were home runs, including a grand slam, a three-run blast and two solo shots. The outburst was Windish’s second multi-homer game of the season and the first since blasting two homers on April 9. The 25-year-old has gone deep in just one other game this season, meaning he has one game with one homer, one game with two homers and one game with four homers. In other words, Windish hit more home runs on Tuesday than he has games with home runs this season.

Samuel Basallo, C, Orioles: On Tuesday, in the opener of his team’s series at Reading, Basallo continued his excellent season. The 19-year-old backstop went 2-for-3 with a longball in the Baysox’s loss to the Fightins. The homer was his 11th of the season, vaulting him into a tie for sixth place in the Eastern League.

Sebastian Walcott, SS, Rangers: After a quiet first two months, Walcott has gotten into a June groove. He continued that trend on Tuesday, when he tripled and homered in his team’s loss to Greenville. The home run was his sixth of the year and the triple was his fourth of the season. Together, the hits helped bring his June line to .310/.354/.521 with five doubles and two home runs.

Jackson Holliday, 2B, Orioles: The Orioles have announced that Holliday is coming off the IL. As he works back from his elbow injury, he will only DH for the next few weeks. Holliday was hitting .270/.433/.466 for Triple-A Norfolk at the time of his injury. He was placed on the IL on June 14th, having not played since June 12th.

Another 2024 international signing to keep on your radar…

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Jesus Made, SS, Brewers: The Brewers paid $950,000 to sign Made on Jan. 15, giving him their second-highest bonus of this year’s international signing period. The early returns have been exciting, with Made batting .367/.475/.694 in 59 plate appearances in the Dominican Summer League, drawing more walks (9) than strikeouts (8) and blasting three home runs in 14 games.

He’s a 17-year-old switch-hitter with a strong, physical 6-foot-2 frame and big bat speed, showing flashes of above-average power to go with his above-average athleticism. Made’s bat speed and power stood out as an amateur, with some questions as to how polished his pure hitting ability would be, but so far he has shown good bat-to-ball skills and swing decisions to go with that power. Made is a plus runner with a plus arm who has mostly played shortstop, though he has gotten time at third base and second as well while splitting shortstop reps with fellow big-ticket 2024 signing Luis Peña. Made’s offensive game stands out more than his defense, with a chance he could continue to develop at shortstop, but the tools to handle either third base or potentially center field as well.
