PROSPECT STANDOUTS

George Lombard Jr., SS, Yankees: Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2023 draft, impressed evaluators this spring and showed he fits well with the system’s pack of talented prospects at the lower levels of the minor leagues. Though his Low-A Tampa club lost on Wednesday, Lombard had an excellent night. The big league progeny went 2-for-3 and drew two walks (he also made two errors), marking his first multi-hit game of the season and the third of his young career.

Xavier Isaac, 1B, Rays: Isaac has prodigious power, and he showed it on Wednesday against the rival Greenville Drive. Over the first five innings, the hulking first baseman collected his first double and his first home run of the season. The longball was an opposite-field blast that Isaac snuck over the wall after leaning out over the plate to get a pitch on the outer half from new Boston prospect David Sandlin.

Jett Williams, SS, Mets: Mets top prospect Jett Williams showed off his wheels a bit during Wednesday’s tilt with Erie, when the shortstop did a nice job filling up the box score. After moving from Low-A to Double-A in 2023, Williams returned to the latter level to begin the 2024 campaign. Facing the SeaWolves, Williams notched a double and a triple—his first three-bagger of the year—in his team’s win. Williams also scored a run and picked up an RBI.

Dalton Rushing, C, Dodgers: Despite a rough 2023 season that was stymied by injuries, Dalton Rushing stands atop the Dodgers’ pack of promising catching prospects. The group also includes Diego Cartaya, Thayron Liranzo and Jesus Galiz. In a matinee against Arkansas, the Louisville alum swatted his first home run of the season. The second-inning blast was part of a two-hit afternoon that also included a double, a walk, three runs and two RBIs.

Jeferson Quero, C, Brewers: Brewers catcher Jeferson Quero will miss all but one inning of the 2024 season due to a shoulder injury, the Brewers told reporters on Tuesday. Quero injured his shoulder diving back into first base on a pickoff throw in the first inning on Triple-A Opening Day. The injury requires surgery that will sideline him for nine months. If there is a bright spot in some disappointing news for Quero and the Brewers it is that the 21-year-old catcher will still be one of the younger players in AAA when he returns next season.

Jackson Holliday, 2B, Orioles: Holliday started at second base and batted ninth in his debut for the Orioles, who beat the Red Sox 7-5 at Fenway Park. Holliday went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts — and also failed to corral a pop-up in shallow right field that led to a run — but he did notch his first career RBI on a groundout to second base in the sixth inning.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Won-Bin Cho, OF, Cardinals: Cho, the Cardinals’ first amateur signing out of Asia, has long captivated with his penchant for impressive exit velocities and athleticism. Now, the question is whether St. Louis’ player development program can coax more in-game impact out of the 20-year-old outfielder.
