Prospect Standouts

Druw Jones, OF, D-backs: It’s no secret that Jones’ career hasn’t gotten off to the start he or the Diamondbacks would have hoped. Between injuries and subpar performances, the second overall pick from the 2022 draft has had a rough go of it in pro ball. This month, however, things are starting to tick up a bit. In his Visalia club’s win on Tuesday, Jones went 3-for-5 and finished a home run shy of the cycle. The effort continued a strong month during which Jones has hit .315/.400/.466 with six doubles, a triple and a home run. He’s striking out dramatically less, too, with a rate of roughly 26% this month compared to roughly 40% in April.

Luke Keaschall, INF, Twins: Keaschall caught scouts’ attention during spring training. Now, he’s backing up that performance with a strong regular season. The infielder finished his time at High-A Cedar Rapids with a .335/.457/.544 slash line with 12 doubles, seven home runs and more walks (30) than strikeouts (29). That performance earned a promotion to Double-A, where he started with a bang. On Tuesday, in his first game in the Texas League, Keaschall went 2-for-4 with a double.

Gary Gill Hill, RHP, Rays: Though his outing was shortened by rain to just two innings, Gary Gill Hill’s outing on Tuesday put a nice bow on what was a stellar month. The righthander struck out one and walked one over the pair of shutout frames, bringing his May line to 1-0, 1.89 with just 10 hits and two walks allowed over 19 innings. He struck out 19 in the span as well. For the season, Gill Hill has 38 punchouts against 11 walks.

Hayden Birdsong, RHP, Giants: Birdsong is one of the Giants’ brightest pitching prospects. He opened eyes in 2023 with a performance mainly at the Class A levels, and in 2024 he is reinforcing his reputation at Double-A. On Tuesday, he shut down Erie for six innings, allowing just five hits and no walks while striking out six. The outing lowered his season ERA to 1.96 and brought his strikeout total to 53 in 41.1 innings.

Spencer Schwellenbach, RHP, Braves: According to reports from Robert Murray, the Braves are calling up righthander Spencer Schwellenbach to make his big league debut. The 2023 Futures Game alumnus has been excellent in Double-A this season, striking out 51 hitters in 45 innings while working to a 4-1, 1.80 mark. The Nebraska alum was selected in the second round of the 2021 draft. Baseball America has written about Schwellenbach several times in recent days, including articles from Geoff Pontes, Dylan White and BA’s weekly Hot Sheet.

A powerful Reds relief prospect is throwing more strikes…

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Zach Maxwell, RHP, Reds: When the Reds drafted Maxwell out of Georgia Tech, they knew they were getting a big-time arm. But they also likely knew he’d need continued development, considering he walked 98 batters in 97.2 innings while striking out 160 as a reliever over three seasons in college. That held true as a pro, but the powerful Maxwell is starting to see his walk rate decrease as he climbs the ladder in Cincinnati’s system.
