Colt Emerson Has Arrived
Plus: RoboScout's latest rankings, Dzierwa gets promoted and more.
The Baseball America Prospect Report is a free daily morning newsletter. Please consider helping to spread the word by forwarding to your friends and helping us grow the BA community!
Colt Emerson, SS, Mariners: The No. 3 prospect in baseball, Emerson was called up to the major leagues on Sunday. Starting at third base, Emerson went 0-for-2 with a walk in his MLB debut.
Emerson was promoted after Brandon Donovan landed on the injured list with a groin strain. The 20-year-old is expected to primarily handle third base early on, and the Mariners have made clear they hope he claims the job and remains in the majors for the rest of the season.
Emerson signed an eight-year, $95 million extension in April. He was hitting .255/.347/.469 for Triple-A Tacoma at the time of the promotion.
Ralphy Velazquez, 1B/OF, Guardians: Velazquez went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of home runs for Double-A Akron on Sunday. The two homers were his sixth and seventh of the season. Velazquez is now hitting .317/.414/.566.
What might have been just as notable was Velazquez’s work in left field. Sunday marked his second game there this season after he played just two games in left field all of last year. While Velazquez has made significant defensive strides at first base, adding outfield versatility would give him another path to the major leagues.
Kevin Alvarez, OF, Astros: Alvarez had one of his best games of the season on Sunday for Low-A Fayetteville, going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. Alvarez got things started with a no-doubt homer to right field in the first inning. He added a single later in the game and doubled to center field in the eighth inning. Alvarez is now hitting .254/.308/.451. He was also thrown out attempting to steal and is now 3-for-7 on stolen base attempts this season.
Zyhir Hope, OF, Dodgers: Hope capped a hot weekend by homering twice against Double-A Springfield on Sunday. Hope also went deep on Saturday, raising his season total to nine home runs. Hope’s power often shows up best when he drives the ball the other way, but his third-inning homer was yanked just inside the right field foul pole. He flashed his opposite-field power in the sixth inning, clearing the fence in the left-center field alley. Hope is now hitting .265/.331/.476 for Tulsa.
James Tibbs III, OF, Dodgers: Tibbs is on another hot streak for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Tibbs went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two walks, four runs scored and four RBIs on Sunday at Albuquerque. He also had a three-hit game on Friday.
While Tibbs hasn’t homered yet this month, he’s hitting .304 in May and is now up to .314/.422/.616 overall. Even with the brief power drought, he still has 11 home runs on the season. He’s also cut down on the strikeouts this month, punching out 11 times in 13 games after striking out 36 times in 26 games in April.
Joseph Dzierwa, LHP, Orioles: After eight stellar starts for High-A Fredericksburg, Dzierwa is headed to Double-A Chesapeake.
Dzierwa went 5-1, 2.21 with 50 strikeouts and 10 walks over 40.2 innings this season. He entered the year ranked No. 17 in the Orioles’ system, but he’ll climb to No. 5 when Baseball America updates the rankings on May 18.
A second-round pick out of Michigan State last season, Dzierwa gives hitters a funky look, and his changeup has largely baffled Class A batters. The next step will be refining the consistency of his breaking ball against upper-level hitters.
Billy Carlson, SS, White Sox: Low-A Kannapolis has been a bit of a struggle offensively for Carlson, but recently he’s started to show signs of putting things together.
Carlson went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a stolen base on Sunday. That followed a 3-for-4 performance earlier in the week. He’s hitting .279/.415/.349 in May, raising his overall slash line to .248/.378/.326.
Patience at the plate has been a key part of Carlson’s approach, but the extra-base impact has started to tick up recently. He has three doubles over his past three games after totaling just six extra-base hits in his first 31 games.
Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.
Yaqui Rivera, RHP, Orioles: The 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic has interesting data as he comes in from a very low slot and has extreme East-West movement, with 18 inches of run on his 93 mph sinker and 15 inches of sweep on his 82 mph sweeper. The metrics on the sinker are very similar to Giants starting pitcher Landen Roupp who has shown success with this type of extreme side-to-side arsenal. An extremely interesting name and arsenal for the Orioles.
