Prospect Standouts

Kevin Alcantara, OF, Cubs: After a putrid beginning to 2024, Kevin Alcantara has been en fuego since the beginning of last week. After making the Hot Sheet in week three, Alcantara kicked off week four in style. He went 3-for-5 with two home runs, solo shots in the first and the seventh. Alcantara is 12-for-21 over his last five games with four home runs and looks to be clearly out of his early-season slump.

Logan Evans, RHP, Mariners: One of the top breakout prospects of spring training, Evans enjoyed the best start of his career on Tuesday. The 6-foot-4 righthander tossed five scoreless innings for Double-A Arkansas allowing three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Evans landed 69% of his pitches for strikes and generated 10 swinging strikes and four groundball outs. Evans has a sparkling 1.86 ERA while holding hitters to a .206 batting average.

Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: After a late start to the season, the Yankees’ top prospect has come out of the gates at a roaring pace. Jones hit his second home run of the season in the top of the third, hitting the ball 108 mph to deep center field. The towering shot gives Jones homers in back to back games. Jones had two more hits on the night and he’s now hitting .432 over his first seven games of action in 2024. A promotion to Triple-A should be coming within a matter of weeks.

Kyle Manzardo, 1B, Guardians: Manzardo, the Guardians’ No. 4 prospect, began the season mired in a power slump. The first baseman only connected for one home run over his first 71 plate appearances. Things have turn around quickly. Manzardo connected for his fifth home run over nine plate appearances on Tuesday. The hot streak dates dating back to the fourth inning of Saturday’s game against Buffalo. Manzardo’s homer came in the first inning off of Syracuse starter and Mets top pitching prospect Christian Scott.

Tyler Black, 1B, Brewers: The Brewers’ No. 4 prospect has been hot to start the season for Nashville, particularly over his last three series. Black notched his fifth multi-hit effort over his last eight games on Tuesday night. Black reached base four times with a pair of hits and two walks. He made the most of his hits, connecting for a 390-foot home run in the top of the sixth and a 92 mph single in the top of the eighth. Black has seen a majority of his time defensively at first base this season, which puts added pressure on his bat to produce.

Christian Scott, RHP, Mets: The Mets’ top pitching prospect continues to make a strong case for a callup to the major leagues. On Tuesday night, Scott went 6.1 innings allowing two earned runs, one hit, a walk while striking out eight. Scott’s only two baserunners of the outing came in the top of the first inning. Scott allowed a leadoff  walk to Myles Straw followed by a home run two batters later to Kyle Manzardo. Following the home run, Scott retired the next 18 batters he faced before coming out of the game in the top of the seventh.

Keep an eye on this Rangers righty

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Winston Santos, RHP, Rangers: For years, Santos has been an intriguing piece of the Rangers’ system. He had an excellent fastball in the mid 90s, which is always a good start, but didn’t have a reliable offspeed as a complement. His breaking ball was especially lacking. Early this season, that no longer seems to be as much of an issue. Santos has changed the grip on his slider into a gyro version and has seen intriguing results. He struck out a dozen Greensboro hitters in his last start and showed a breaking ball that was far better than its previous iterations. His changeup worked at times as well. All three pitches in concert produced 17 swings and misses over the course of five innings. If he can continue sharpening his offspeeds throughout the summer, he should move up the system’s ranks.
