Charlie Condon Returns To Action
Plus: AJ Smith-Shawver graduates prospect status in style, and a pair of ACL performances of note

Charlie Condon, OF, Rockies: Condon, the club's first-round pick in 2024, went 2-for-2 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored and two RBIs in the ACL Rockies game on Monday. It marked his first game action since he broke his wrist making a diving catch during spring training. Condon was able to also play left field during his first game back. The return to action is a key first step on getting Condon back to full-season baseball. Last year’s third overall pick has accrued just 100 High-A professional at-bats so far, where he hit .180/.248/.270 over 25 games last year.
Condon wasn’t the only notable prospect back in action…
Blake Mitchell, C, Royals: Mitchell made his first game appearance since breaking the hamate bone in his hand during spring training. Mitchell went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases in the ACL Royals' game on Monday. He also caught five innings before being pulled from the game.
AJ Smith-Shawver, RHP, Braves: Smith-Shawver entered Monday needing just four more outs to graduate from prospect status. The Braves righty got plenty more than that in the best start of his young big league career. Smith-Shawver carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning of Atlanta's 4-0 win over the Reds before Santiago Espinal ended it with a single to lead off the frame. The 22-year-old righty finished the inning, allowing just the one hit while walking four batters and striking out five over the outing. Smith-Shawver sat at 94-96 mph on Monday, and he spotted his low-80s splitter quite well, throwing it 29 times in 99 pitches. The rookie has now turned in two consecutive encouraging starts since the Braves recalled him from Triple-A Gwinnett prior to an April 29 outing against the Rockies.
Jose Anderson, OF, Brewers: The Brewers signed Anderson for $60,000 as part of their 2024 international class and he immediately looked like a steal. He hit eight homers in the Dominican Summer League, the most by any DSL hitter in their system since 2019, and ranked 29th entering the season, sneaking into the back of a loaded Top 30. Anderson appears to have brought that power stroke stateside. He hit two more homers yesterday in the Arizona Complex League as part of a 2-for-4 day. Both of his homers came off Cubs farmhand Anhuar Garcia. Anderson's swing is geared toward damage, and he has a chance for at least above-average power as he continues to mature.
He wasn’t the only notable Brewers ACL prospect to go deep yesterday, either:
In the ACL, Jadyn Fielder—son of Prince, grandson of Cecil—just homered in his first at-bat as a pro.

Dylan Jordan, RHP, Angels: Jordan made his professional debut Monday in the Arizona Complex League, throwing four scoreless innings while striking out three batters and walking three more. Jordan, 19, was Los Angeles' fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft out of the Florida prep ranks and signed for $1,247,500 -- the equivalent of late-second round money. Jordan had some of the better pure stuff of any high schooler in last year's draft class and his low-90s running fastball caught the Angels' attention in the predraft process. He ranked 19th in their system entering the season and will need to show better control and a more consistent changeup as a starter in pro ball.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.
Asbel Gonzalez, OF, Royals: Gonzalez is one of this season’s fastest risers. He’s also one of this season’s fastest runners. The 19-year-old burner put together a strong first stateside season—spent mostly in the Arizona Complex League but also including a cameo at Double-A Northwest Arkansas—and finished with 23 stolen bases in 45 games. This year, he’s kicked it into hyperdrive. After the first series of May, Gonzalez already has 31 stolen bases in 26 games. He’s been caught seven times. To put that into perspective, in his 104-steal season, Chandler Simpson had 27 steals in 31 tries. If these trends continue, we could be looking at a second straight MiLB season with the steals leader breaching triple-digits. Of course, to steal bases, a player must get on base. That’s no problem for Gonzalez, whose .404 batting average and .513 on-base percentage were the best in the minor leagues.

Dodgers prospect Emil Morales, one of our 10 ACL players to watch, also went deep yesterday.
A’s two-way infielder Shotaro Morii went 2-for-4 yesterday in the ACL as well. Morii has yet to take the mound because an elbow injury.
Speaking of A’s prospects, Nick Kurtz went 1-for-4 last night with no strikeouts. It’s only the second time this season — but second time in three games — that Kurtz has gone without punching out since his big league debut on April 23rd.
