Carson Williams Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam
Plus: Four notable prospect promotions as the calendar flips to September.
Double-A Montgomery’s roster is a ton of fun between several Top 100 Prospects and two players — Chandler Simpson and Tre’ Morgan — vying for the MiLB batting title. Yesterday was Carson Williams’ turn to dazzle. He headlines a deep Wednesday Baseball America Prospect Report.
Carson Williams, SS, Rays: Williams has turned in an impressive age-21 season with Double-A Montgomery, rising to No. 8 in our latest Top 100 on the strength of his excellent defense and power potential. He showed off that thump in a big spot Tuesday night, hitting a walk-off grand slam in a 7-4 extra-innings win over Chattanooga. Williams went 2-for-5 on the night and is now hitting .254/.350/.462 with 18 homers and 32 steals, albeit with a 28.5% strikeout rate.
Isaac Coffey, RHP, Red Sox: The Red Sox have one of the best systems in the game, led by a quartet of prospects which includes Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and Marcelo Mayer. Coffey has had a strong year of his own, which continued on Tuesday night when he struck out nine hitters over six two-run innings for Double-A Portland. After the outing, Coffey is now 10-4, 3.33 with 138 strikeouts in 108 innings in the Eastern League.
Zac Veen, OF, Rockies: Veen has had a roller-coaster of a time over the past two years. He’s seen plenty of both highs and lows—including time on the injured list—and now is on the precipice of the big leagues. On Tuesday, he took another step toward that goal by going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, three runs and an RBI for Albuquerque. The blast was Veen’s third at Triple-A and eighth overall in a season that has been limited to just 53 games.
Juan Flores, C, Angels: It’s no secret that the Angels are aggressive when it comes to moving their prospects through the minors, oftentimes even having them skip levels entirely. On Opening Day, Flores was the youngest player in the California League by a wide margin. The 18-year-old backstop more than held his own, accumulating a .280/.345/.425 line over 48 games before getting the bump to the Northwest League. Though he hasn’t been as hot at High-A, he put together a strong game on Tuesday by going 4-for-4 with four runs and an RBI for Tri-City. It was Flores’ first four-hit game of the year and the first since July 22, 2023, when he was playing in the Dominican Summer League.
Notable Promotions
Bryce Eldridge, 1B, Giants: After a fantastic turn at High-A, Eldridge is moving to the upper levels of the minor leagues. The Giants on Tuesday bumped the slugging Eldridge to Double-A Richmond. The move comes after a final week of annihilation in the Northwest League, where he swatted five home runs in a six-game series with Everett. Overall, the lefty swinger is hitting .296/.381/.542 with 25 doubles, 22 home runs and 86 RBIs between both Class A stops.
Blake Mitchell, C, Royals: After an outstanding turn at Low-A, the Royals have moved their top catching prospect to the next level. Mitchell, the team’s 2023 first-rounder, showed plenty of power and patience at Low-A Columbia, where he hit .238/.376/.439 with 16 doubles, 18 home runs and 79 walks in 106 games. His strikeout rate of 30% is concerning, but there’s still plenty to like from the 20-year-old.
Alejandro Rosario, RHP, Rangers: Rosario is one of the best breakout pitchers of the year. Now, he’s headed to Double-A. The Rangers announced on Tuesday that they were moving the Miami alum to the Texas League. The move is more than warranted after unqualified dominance of both the Carolina and South Atlantic Leagues. Combined between both stops, Rosario is 4-5, 2.24 with 129 strikeouts against just 13 walks.
Aidan Miller, SS, Phillies: After a standout season at the Class A levels, Miller is going to get his first shot at the upper realms of the minor leagues. The Phillies the move on Tuesday, just days after Miller put forth one of the best games of his young career. After finishing August with a .299/.370/.536 line and three home runs, he opened September by going 5-for-5 with a double and a longball. Overall, he’s hitting .265/.373/.470 with 28 doubles and 11 home runs.

Now, he’s opened the eyes of evaluators with his combination of physicality, athleticism and production.
