Cam Smith's Incredible Home Run Streak Continues

Plus: Termarr Johnson is headed to the upper minors and Drake Baldwin remains scorching hot.

Happy Monday, which is turning into an unofficial moving day for top prospects as the season winds to a close. Cubs first-rounder Cam Smith is the headliner, earning a promotion after homering in six consecutive games. More below.

Cam Smith, 3B, Cubs: Whenever you take a new job, it’s always valuable to make a great first impression. Cubs first-rounder Cam Smith has aced that assignment. The Low-A Myrtle Beach third baseman homered for a sixth straight game on Sunday. Smith has played 14 games for the Pelicans. He’s fifth on the team in home runs. Smith was hitting just .154 after eight games with the Pelicans, but he homered on Tuesday, and he hasn’t stopped homering since. He’s now hitting .319/.411/.787. Having seen him dominate the Carolina League, The Cubs are promoting him to High-A South Bend, as first reported by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates: Monday has become moving day for MiLB prospects. The off day around the minors is the perfect time for promotions. Johnson is on the move to Double-A Altoona, as first reported by Chase Ford. Johnson hit .238/.372/.385 at High-A Greensboro with 13 home runs and 20 steals in 24 attempts. Johnson has an excellent July that saw him hit .319/.443/.528, but he’s struggled again in August, hitting .203/.277/.324.

Johnson wasn’t the only notable mover over the weekend. The Orioles are promoting MLB’s No. 17 prospect, Samuel Basallo, to Triple-A, as MASN’s Steve Melewski first reported yesterday. The Tigers also called up Ty Madden to make his big league debut Monday night.

Lucas Braun, RHP, Braves: Braun held Double-A Montgomery hitless for seven scoreless innings, walking three while striking out 10. It’s Braun’s second consecutive 10-strikeout game and he’s 1-1, 1.99 in August. The M-Braves carried the no-hitter into the ninth inning. With one out, Tyler Callihan doubled to break up the no-hitter.

Caden Dana, RHP, Angels: Facing Montgomery for the second time this week, Dana held the Biscuits to five hits, no walks and one unearned run in six innings. Dana struck out seven. It’s yet another exceptional start in an amazing August. Dana is 3-0, 0.57 this month with 32 strikeouts and seven walks in 31.1 innings. The 20-year-old is holding hitters to a .184 average and has a 0.94 WHIP while going 9-7, 2.52.

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: Caissie went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a double. Neither home run will rank among Caissie’s bigger blasts, as the first measured at 383 feet and the second traveled 385 feet. It’s been a solid if unspectacular season for Caissie as he follows up his breakout 2023 season that saw him hit 22 home runs. This year, he has 15 home runs and is hitting .268/.367/.455.

Drake Baldwin, C, Braves: Baldwin went 3-for-5 for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday, which was his 10th multi-hit game of the month. Baldwin is hitting .371 this month and .281/.374/.416 overall this year. The Braves’ best position prospect has been even better since his midseason promotion to Gwinnett. Baldwin is hitting .317/.429/.492.

Enrique Bradfield, OF, Orioles: Bradfield Jr. went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base on Sunday for Double-A Bowie. It was Bradfield’s first four-hit game of his pro career and it raised his stat line at Bowie to .318/.423/.455. Bradfield is hitting .274/.355/.375 with 65 steals in 76 attempts.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Ty Johnson, RHP, Rays: After being a part of the Isaac Paredes trade with the Cubs, Johnson has made four appearances for High-A Bowling Green, including one as a starter, and the 22-year old righthander has struck out 45% of the batters he’s faced with a sub-1.00 WHIP and sub-1.00 ERA over 14 innings. The 2023 15th-rounder has a 94 mph fastball that has touched 98 mph, along with an 84 mph slider and 82 mph changeup, all thrown with above-average extension leading them to play up. On the Cubs, his pitch mix was 55% four-seamer, 33% slider, 8% changeup, and 4% two-seamer. Since the trade to the Rays, it’s 39% four-seamer, 31% two-seamer, 28% slider and the changeup only 2%. In other words, it’s been a big increase in his sinker usage and reduction in changeup usage, possibly because the cambio was his only pitch that had a CSW% that was below league average.
