Plus: 10 Prospects With Big Exit Velocity Gains In 2025

The BAPR is a free daily morning newsletter. Please consider help spreading the word by forwarding to your friends and helping us grow the Baseball America community!

Jonah Tong, RHP, Mets: While the theme of today’s newsletter is callups we’re hopeful to see, the Mets took the guess work out of a big one on Tuesday. They are calling up righthander Jonah Tong to make his MLB debut on Friday against the Marlins. The 22-year-old leads the minor leagues with 179 strikeouts, a 1.43 ERA and .148 opponent average while pitching at the upper levels. Key to Tong's breakout this season are increased fastball velocity—it sits in the mid 90s, up several ticks from last year—and a new Vulcan grip on his changeup. The separation on his changeup combined with its horizontal break have made it an out pitch for Tong, whom the Mets drafted out of high school in the seventh round in 2022.

Two other Top 100 Prospects in Triple-A had big nights on Tuesday…

Carter Jensen, C, Royals: Jensen slugged a pair of homers on Tuesday as he continues to find more thump with Triple-A Omaha. Jensen opened his night with a first-inning blast off Mitch Neunborn, then doubled back for more in the sixth inning with a 388-foot homer off RHP Lucas Sims. Jensen has now homered five times in August and owns a 1.044 OPS in Triple-A. Jensen's power surge has been brewing for the better part of two months. He turned in one of the best batting practices of any player at the Futures Game, and his underlying data caught our eye in both July and August. Jensen and rehabbing outfielder Jac Caglianone, who is no longer prospect eligible, occupied the heart of Omaha's order on Tuesday. Could the Royals soon call on both to help supplement their big league lineup as they cling to life in the AL playoff race?

Sal Stewart, 3B/2B, Reds: Stewart is doing everything he can to prove that he can play a role in helping keep Cincinnati's playoff hopes alive in the final month of the season. Stewart ripped a 109.6 mph homer to left field off lefthander John Means in the first inning of a 7-0 Triple-A Louisville win on Monday. The blast was Stewart's third in as many games and, notably, was yet another homer to his pull side as he continues to show more ability to elevate to left field. Stewart now owns a 1.070 OPS and 10 homers through 34 games since his promotion to Triple-A. While he may have some defensive limitations and sometimes struggles to optimize his ball flight, Stewart makes boatloads of consistent hard contact and rarely misses in the zone.

They aren’t the only upper-level performers who have our attention. This week’s prospect podcast took a deep dive into seven more prospects that we’d love to see get the call, even if some are a bit of a long shot.

Bryce Eldridge, 1B, Giants: One prospect we’re unlikely to see is Giants 20-year-old first baseman Bryce Eldridge. He has some of the most precocious power in the minors, but Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said it's unlikely the club will tab Eldridge as a potential September callup in an interview with the San Francisco Standard.

“I'd say most likely not,” Posey said. “We want him to just get that consistent play. And we want him, when his time does come, to feel like we're putting him in the best position to hit the ground running.”

Eldridge, the No. 20 prospect in baseball, rocketed through every level of the minors in 2024, topping out in Triple-A while hitting .291/.374/.516 with 23 homers across 116 games. A wrist injury and a hamstring strain limited Eldridge to just 85 games this year, but he has still managed to blast 21 homers--including 14 in 49 Triple-A games. Some wondered whether Eldridge could be a late-season boost for San Francisco's lineup. But with the Giants fading from postseason relevance, the club seems intent to instead wait for 2026.

Kevin McGonigle, SS, Tigers: McGonigle once again played the role of hero on Tuesday night. The No. 2 prospect in baseball slugged a go ahead two-run home run in the top of the 11th as Double-A Erie bested New Hampshire 4-3. McGonigle went 2-for-4 on the night, with the home run, a walk, strikeout and a caught stealing. McGonigle is hitting .276/.399/.586 with eight home runs over 32 games in Double-A. He's making a strong case for another promotion before the end of the season, whether that's Triple-A Toledo or directly to Detroit.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.

Dax Kilby, SS, Yankees: When the Yankees drafted Dax Kilby 39th overall this year, the 18-year-old arrived in pro ball with an impressive track record of hitting for a high schooler, and it's showing up so far in his full-season debut. Kilby went 4-for-5 yesterday for Low-A Tampa in a rout of Bradenton with a triple that left the bat 106.6 mph, two steals—including swiping home on a double-steal—and drove in three runs. Kilby's triple came off recently acquired Pirates RHP Jeter Martinez. In a very small 10-game sample, the sweet-swinging lefty is hitting .308/.400/.410 with more walks (six) than strikeouts (four). His hot start has put him on RoboScout's fantasy radar as well.
