Bubba Chandler Spins Another Gem

Plus: There's a new No. 1 prospect in baseball and we have a preview of prospects we like in Bowman Chrome 2024.

Roman Anthony officially rises to No. 1 in our Top 100 following the graduation of Junior Caminero. Elsewhere, the Pirates continue to strike the right notes when it comes to pitching development. Bubba Chandler turned in another outing with double-digit strikeouts and yielded zero runs for the fourth time in six Triple-A appearances.

Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox: The 20-year-old outfielder is officially the No. 1 prospect in baseball after Junior Caminero exceeded prospect eligibility last night. This also puts Anthony in pole position to enter the 2025 season as baseball’s top prospect, something only two other Red Sox prospects have done previously. Read more…

Bubba Chandler, RHP, Pirates: As the minor league season hits the home stretch, the Pirates’ pitching factory is humming along in top form. Chandler, Pittsburgh’s top prospect, proved as much with his outstanding outing on Tuesday. Facing Rochester, Chandler took a perfect game into the sixth inning and finished with six shutout innings with just a hit and two walks on his ledger. He also racked up 10 strikeouts. The outing brings Chandler’s season totals to 140 strikeouts and just 39 walks over 114 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

JJ Wetherholt, SS, Cardinals: The Cardinals’ 2024 first-rounder led BA’s most recent version of Hot Sheet. For an encore, he gave his Low-A Palm Beach team an early postseason jump-start. The West Virginia alum crunched a two-run home run in the first inning of PB’s series-opener with Daytona. The blast was a two-run shot that came three batters into the game and gave Palm Beach a lead it would never relinquish.

George Lombard Jr., SS, Yankees: In the regular season, the Yankees’ 2023 first-rounder had 25 doubles in 110 games. After just one postseason game, he has three more. The shortstop helped his Hudson Valley squad to a series-opening victory by going 3-for-5 with a trio of two-baggers and three RBIs. Though it won’t count toward his official stats, the three doubles are a high-water mark for Lombard this season and the game was just the third all year with multiple doubles.

Mason Barnett, RHP, Athletics: The A’s beefed up their farm system this summer by trading some of their valuable players to contending clubs. One such deal sent closer Lucas Erceg to Kansas City and netted them a return that included Barnett. The Auburn alum and 2022 third-rounder was on his game on Tuesday, when he punched out nine Corpus Christi hitters over seven shutout innings with just two hits and three walks. Barnett has been outstanding since making the intra-Texas League move from Northwest Arkansas to Midland. Tuesday’s outing was the third time he’s gone seven innings this season, all of which have come in his last five turns. He now has 52 strikeouts against 13 walks in his time in the A’s organization.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Jackson Baumeister, RHP, Rays: Baumeister is a popular name around these parts recently. Tampa Bay acquired the 6-foot-4 righty from the Orioles at the trade deadline in the Zach Eflin deal. Baumeister promptly struck out 44 batters through his first 29 innings in his new org, earning him a top-10 spot in this week’s Hot Sheet. He is also a recent favorite of RoboScout and was the subject of a segment in our latest fantasy podcast.
