Bubba Chandler Has Little Left To Prove In The Minors
Plus: Tommy White and Carson Williams are among the players who turned in powerful performances on Thursday.

Bubba Chandler, RHP, Pirates: Paul Skenes and Jared Jones made an immediate impact upon joining the Pirates rotation. Now, Chandler looks ready to follow suit. The 22-year-old dazzled again Thursday for Triple-A Indianapolis, striking out nine over five scoreless innings while touching 100.4 mph. He generated the second-most whiffs (15) of any Triple-A pitcher yesterday. Chandler's ERA is now 1.42 over six starts. With top pitching prospects like Chase Dollander and Jackson Jobe already making their MLB debuts, the question isn’t if the Pirates will call up Chandler—it’s when. Chandler now owns a 1.67 ERA with 90 strikeouts over 64.2 Triple-A innings dating back to last season. He appears to have checked every box in the minors leagues. The next stop is Pittsburgh.
Tommy White, 3B, Athletics: White started May the same way he ended April—swinging a hot bat. The 22-year-old slugger crushed a solo home run to left field on Thursday for High-A Lansing, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. “Tommy Tanks” has been on a rampage during that stretch, recording eight multi-hit games. His recent streak has not only showcased his elite power but also his ability to hit for average and produce in key moments while maintaining impressive plate discipline–only striking out five times over those 15 games.
Carson Williams, SS, Rays: So far, Williams' first extended stint with Triple-A Durham hasn't gone as the Rays had hoped. The 22-year-old entered May with a 39.4% strikeout rate and a 65 wRC+ at the level. But his performance Thursday night might be the jolt he needs. Williams hit his third homer of the season, crushing a changeup left over the heart of the plate 111.7 mph to left field in his final at-bat of the game. He went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, marking only the second time this year he has recorded multiple hits in a game. Williams entered 2025 as one of the most coveted shortstop prospects in baseball and has now homered twice in his last five games.
Arjun Nimmala, SS, Blue Jays: Nimmala entered the season as the second-youngest player in the High-A Northwest League. Yet the 19-year-old Blue Jays prospect already looks like one of the most dangerous hitters on the circuit. The 2023 first-round pick launched his sixth home run of the season on Thursday for Vancouver, putting him atop the Northwest League home run leaderboard. Nimmala, who made history as the highest-drafted player of Indian descent, has been on a tear lately, going deep in four of his last six games while driving in 10 runs during that stretch.
Trey Yesavage, RHP, Blue Jays: Trey Yesavage’s stock dipped ahead of the 2024 MLB Draft because of concerns about his medical reports. The Blue Jays took a chance on him, and so far, it’s paying off. Coming off back-to-back 10-strikeout performances, the righthander delivered the best outing of his professional career on Thursday. He twirled six scoreless innings, striking out eight batters, allowing just four hits and issuing no walks for Low-A Dunedin. It’s the third start Yesavage has gone without handing out a free pass, a strong sign considering he walked six in his first start of the season. The East Carolina product has a 2.31 ERA through five starts this year.
Blaine Crim, 1B/DH, Rangers: It's a November tradition at Baseball America. When we publish our Rule 5 preview, it includes Rangers first baseman Blaine Crim. He was in the 2024 Preview, the 2023 Preview and the 2022 Preview. Every year, Crim hits, but every year, he's been passed over in the Rule 5 draft. Now it doesn't matter, as he's a big leaguer. The Rangers have called up their 2019 19th-round pick. He was hitting .313/.365/.565 for Triple-A Round Rock. That's not out of character considering he is a career .296/.372/.507 MiLB hitter with 110 home runs and 668 MiLB hits. The 27-year-old is a below-average defender, so he'll have to hit to stick around in Texas, but with Jake Burger being sent to the minors, Crim is getting a shot at the big leagues. Crim was one of three prospects across baseball to earn callups on Thursday, joining A’s righty Gunnar Hoglund and Reds RHP Luis Mey.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Each day, we’ll pick a prospect that has our attention.
Dylan Dreiling, OF, Rangers: A second-round pick from Tennessee’s 2024 national championship team, Dreiling has stood out with High-A Hub City. Over 19 games in April, he hit .278/.384/.417 with two home runs and five stolen bases. Dreiling rarely whiffed over the first month, netting a swinging-strike rate of just 5.1%. The underlying data shines a light on Dreiling’s balanced skill set. His .435 xwOBA is a standout number, backed by a 19% chase rate, 15% whiff rate and 106 mph max EV. While Dreiling shows average raw power metrics, he makes his best contact at good angles, as evidenced by a 15 degree average launch. Dreiling will likely be challenged with a promotion to Double-A before long, and if his early underlying data is any indication, he could be a prospect on the rise.
