Bryce Eldridge Launches Go-Ahead Home Run

Plus: MLB tests a challenge system on checked swings in the Arizona Fall League.

Bryce Eldridge has one of the sweetest swings in the minor leagues. He’s one of two lefty sluggers featured prominently in this morning’s BAPR, which also dives into MLB’s initial attempts at challenging checked swings in game action. More below.

Bryce Eldridge, 1B, Giants: In the regular season, Eldridge clubbed 23 home runs while moving from Low-A to Triple-A by season’s end. In the Arizona Fall League, he’s picked up right where he left off. On Tuesday, he crushed his second home run of the season, a two-run tie-breaking blast in the ninth inning which gave Scottsdale its margin of victory on the road at Salt River. The home run left the bat at 102 mph and traveled nearly 400 feet to right field.

Josue Briceño, 1B/C, Tigers: In the first half of the Arizona Fall League season, two players have emerged as the circuit’s mightiest mashers: Marlins outfielder Kemp Alderman and Briceño. The former’s latest home run clocked in at 119 mph off the bat, bringing his total to six home runs less than halfway through the fall. Briceño answered Alderman on Tuesday night with a seventh-inning blast at Salt River Fields. The longball came as part of a two-hit night which also included two RBIs. Briceño now leads the AFL in slugging percentage (1.000), OPS (1.500), hits (17, tied with Seattle’s Colt Emerson) and total bases (37).

MLB Tests First-Ever Checked Swing Challenge System In AFL

If you were at Salt River Fields last night, you witnessed history. Mets prospect Drew Gilbert initiated the first-ever in-game automated challenge of a checked swing, a process MLB is testing this fall in Arizona. Baseball America’s Josh Norris was onsite and dives into both what he saw and what the review considers a swing.
