How Will Roki Sasaki's Pitch Mix Translate To MLB?

Plus: Monday was a star-studded evening in the Arizona Fall League.

Josue Briceño, 1B, Tigers: Briceño is dominating the Arizona Fall League. On Monday, the Tigers slugger with the powerful lefthanded swing blasted his ninth home run of the fall. Briceño went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs and a walk. Briceño now leads the AFL in home runs, batting average, RBI, slugging, OPS and hits. It’s been quite the display for Briceño in AFL who has shown his advanced combination of bat-to-ball skills and power. Briceno is likely to move off of catcher to first base, but has the plate skills and power to profile at first base long term.

Denzel Clarke, OF, Athletics: Clarke has quietly been one of the stars of the Fall League this season. The toolsy outfielder with a power-hitter’s build has produced a .388/.506/.582 line in AFL play. On Monday, Clarke hit his second home run of the Fall in a three-hit effort against Glendale. The 2024 season saw Clarke post his second above-average season in Double-A and perform in the Arizona Fall League. With a 40-man roster decision looming, the 24-year-old Clarke may find himself in the mix for at-bats in Oakland in 2025.

Zyhir Hope, OF, Dodgers: When the Dodgers acquired Hope from the Cubs in January they knew they were getting a high-upside talent. They certainly didn’t realize Hope’s hit tool would progress this quickly. After a strong season with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, Hope has performed well in the AFL. Hope celebrated his Fall Stars appearance with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning on Monday. The home run gave Glendale a 7-3 advantage that they never relinquished. Hope’s home run was his fourth of the Fall League and raised his OPS to .811.

Garrett Martin, OF, Yankees: After winning the Arizona Fall League home run derby on Friday, Martin kept the good times rolling on Monday. Martin hit a three-run homer in the first inning of Salt River’s 7-1 victory over Peoria. The blast left the bat 110.7 mph and traveled 442 feet, showcasing his easy plus power. Martin’s profile has swing-and-miss concerns, but he’s a well above-average athlete with plus-plus raw power. It’s an interesting profile for a nondrafted free agent and a player that started to find his footing in the second half of the 2024 season.

Caleb Durbin, 2B, Yankees: It was two years in the making, but Durbin set the Arizona Fall League single-season stolen base record with his 25th steal on Monday. He has been a dominant force in consecutive seasons in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .296/.416/.519 in 2024 after slashing .353/.456/.588 in 2023. Durbin is 40-man roster eligible this winter and will likely be one of the top Rule 5 Draft targets in December if left unprotected. He’s coming off a strong season at Triple-A and has shown the ability to get on-base, make lots of contact and run with some sneaky power. In Monday’s game, Durbin reached base three times going 1-for-2 and was hit by two pitches. He stole four total bases on Monday pushing the AFL record to 27 stolen bases and counting as the season winds to a finish this week.
