Prospect Standouts

Richard Fitts, RHP, Red Sox: Fitts tossed six efficient innings for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, striking out five in the effort. Fitts has allowed just four runs over 15.1 innings this season while striking out 13 batters to just two walks. Fitts needed just 80 pitches to navigate the Durham lineup, allowing four hits and one run on a home run to outfielder Kameron Misner. Fitts sat 93-94 mph on his fastball showing 18-20 inches of induced vertical break while mixing in a slider in the mid 80s, a changeup and a handful of cutters. Fitts could be an option for Boston at some point this summer.

Carson Williams, SS, Rays: The Rays’ No. 2 prospect stayed hot on Wednesday with three hits in Montgomery’s 4-2 loss to Tennessee on Wednesday night. This is Williams’ fifth multi-hit game of the season. The talented shortstop hit his sixth double of the season in the three-hit effort, raising his batting average to .432. Williams is an outstanding defender with plus raw power. The biggest question around his profile is his ability to make contact. So far in 2024, Williams is answering those questions.

A.J. Blubaugh, RHP, Astros: The Astros’ 2022 seventh-round pick, Blubaugh is making his case as the next Astros pitching breakout early in 2024. Blubaugh began the season with Double-A Corpus Christi but was called up to Triple-A Sugar Land after one start. In his two Triple-A starts, Blubaugh has allowed one earned run over a combined 11.1 innings. On Wednesday, Blubaugh went 6.1 innings allowing three hits, one earned run on a home run while striking out eight to zero walks.

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: It’s been a quiet opening to the season for the Cubs’ No. 5 prospect. While Caissie’s overall performance has been fine, until Wednesday he had yet to hit his first home run of the season. The outfielder’s profile is driven by his easy plus power and ability to get to it in games. Cubs fans will hope this is a sign of things to come. The home run came in the bottom of the fifth as Caissie took a sweeper from Sam Moll 397 feet at 101 mph off the bat.

Orelvis Martinez, SS, Blue Jays: The Blue Jays’ No. 2 prospect is off to a strong start at Triple-A Buffalo to begin the season. Martinez is hitting .296/.356/.519 over the first 14 games and hit his second home run of the season on Wednesday. He came up with the bases loaded and two outs with the game tied 8-8 in the top of the 10th and delivered a go-ahead grand slam. Martinez hit a 93 mph fastball down and in 469 feet, the shot was measured at 113.8 mph off the bat. Martinez is an option for the Blue Jays in the short term with a place on the 40-man roster and easy plus power.

Frederick Bencosme, IF, Orioles: It’s no secret that the Orioles are flush with talent, but they might have another sleeper on the way. Two years ago, Bencosme hit .336 over 59 games at Low-A Delmarva before scuffling at High-A Aberdeen over parts of two years. He’s moved up to Double-A—where he opened the year at as the 10th-youngest player on the circuit—and has hit the ground running. The 21-year-old collected three more hits on Wednesday in an early-morning game with Altoona and is now hitting .395/.452/.658 with four apiece of walks and strikeouts. He’s 15-for-38 overall with two doubles, a triple, two homers and nine RBIs.

Juan Flores, C, Angels: Flores is the youngest player not only in the California League, but also the youngest player in all of Low-A. So far, he doesn’t seem to mind facing exclusively older competition. The young backstop continued his early trend in a matinee on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk against Rancho Cucamonga. For the season, Flores is 12-for-35 with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs.

Mike Boeve, 2B, Brewers: Boeve is the hottest hitter in the minor leagues. He makes contact, he rarely strikes out and he draws a lot of walks. His torrid early stretch continued on Wednesday in the first game of High-A Wisconsin’s doubleheader with Cedar Rapids, when he went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk. With that effort, Boeve, Milwaukee’s second-round pick out of Nebraska-Omaha in 2023 moved his season line to an absurd .533/.628/.600. He’s 16-for-30 with two doubles and 11 walks against just four strikeouts.

Can a healthy Reggie Crawford move quickly?

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Reggie Crawford, LHP, Giants: Crawford made his official 2024 debut this week, throwing one shutout inning. The Giants’ 2022 first-round pick is long on talent but short on experience because of injuries. San Francisco opted to end the two-way experiment this year to have Crawford solely focus on pitching. Now, Baseball America’s Josh Norris explains why the success of White Sox LHP Garrett Crochet could provide the Giants a blueprint for Crawford’s ongoing development.
