Alcantara, Jobe Make MLB Debuts
Plus: A pair of Mariners prospects dazzle in the Texas League title and a look at Arizona Fall League rosters.
We’re just a few days away from winding down the in-season version of the BAPR, but have no fear, Arizona Fall League rosters are here. We’ll continue to update the Prospect Report each morning as the fall season starts up. For now, here are four standouts from last night’s slate of games.
Kevin Alcantara, OF, Cubs: The Cubs called up their No. 6 prospect on Wednesday for his big league debut against the Phillies. The outfielder went 1-for-4 in a 9-6 loss. His first career MLB hit was a slow chopper to third base that he beat out without a throw, flashing a strong 29.4 feet per second sprint speed in the process. The 6-foot-6 outfielder has an exciting mix of tools, including a plus arm and an above-average power/speed combination, but hit tool refinement will ultimately dictate his success. He hit .278/.353/.428 with 14 homers and 123 strikeouts in 111 games at the upper levels of the minors this season.
Jackson Jobe, RHP, Tigers: The top pitching prospect in baseball made his MLB debut in relief last night for the Tigers. Jobe came on to start the ninth inning, closing out a 7-1 Tigers victory as they march ever closer to a playoff berth. Jobe needed just nine pitches to retire the Rays in the ninth, generating a pair of groundball outs, one whiff and a single.
Cole Young, SS, Mariners: In a Mariners system littered with tooled-up prospects, Young gets lost in the shuffle. His combination of a plus hit tool and the ability to handle shortstop was on display on Wednesday night. Young collected two hits, his fourth multi-hit game of the Texas League playoffs. Young will head out to the Arizona Fall League in a few weeks, joining Peoria on a team loaded with Top 100 prospects.
Logan Evans, RHP, Mariners: Evans topped off his storybook season with an excellent start in the Double-A Travelers' deciding game in the Texas League championship series. Evans went six innings, allowing one run on five hits, and two walks, striking out nine. He only needed 89 pitches to navigate the opposing RockHounds lineup over six frames. Evans spent the entirety of the 2024 season at Double-A making 24 starts over the regular season and playoffs combined. He looks like another potential rotation candidate churned out by the Mariners player development machine.
The 10 Youngest Players In The Arizona Fall League
One of Baseball America executive editor J.J. Cooper’s many apt adages is that teams often tell us how they feel about a player by the roster decisions they make. That can apply to the Arizona Fall League as well. Yesterday, we looked at the 10 youngest players headed to Arizona this year, which often suggests a certain confidence level a player is ready to face more experienced competition, and perhaps serves as a precursor for more success in 2025.
