Prospect Standouts

Aidan Smith, OF, Mariners: Smith has slid over to right field for Low-A Modesto when Lazaro Montes was promoted to High-A Everett. Smith seems to be enjoying the switch. He extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 4-for-5 night. He hit his California League-leading 21st double and scored three runs. Smith is now hitting .271/.388/.455. He ranks in the top 10 in the Cal League in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, walks, total bases and runs, and he leads the league in extra-base hits (30) in addition to doubles.

Justin Crawford, OF, Phillies: Crawford went 3-for-5 with his fifth home run of the season on Monday for High-A Jersey Shore. Crawford is a hitter who is still working to tap into his power, but he has made improvements in pulling the ball in the air. He yanked a home run just inside the right field foul pole while getting a pair of singles on grounders up the middle.

Daniel Susac, C, Athletics: Susac went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs against Double-A Amarillo on Monday night. Oakland’s 2022 first-round pick only had three home runs before Monday, so it was a big power boost for the backstop. Susac is hitting .289/.317/.428 this year.

Adrian Del Castillo, C, D-backs: Del Castillo went 3-for-5 with a home run on Monday for Triple-A Reno, raising his overall numbers to .329/.402/.604. Reno is a great place to hit, but Del Castillo is among the PCL’s top five in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and home runs. He’s also catching regularly for the Aces.

Chayce McDermott, RHP, Orioles: Not that long ago, the Orioles called up Triple-A Norfolk lefthander Cade Povich to step into the rotation. His Tides’ teammate Chayce McDermott offered another reminder on Monday that he’s available to help as well. McDermott set a career high with 12 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings, baffling the Durham Bulls with a five-pitch mix. McDermott consistently got above Bulls hitters’ bats at the top of the zone with his 94-95 mph fastball, but his changeup and downer curveball were both also effective. He did allow one run on three hits and three walks. McDermott is now 2-5, 3.58 overall for Norfolk this year. He was an astute pickup of the club in the 2022 trade that sent Trey Mancini to the Astros at the trade deadline. While the trade was criticized by many at the time for trading away a veteran while still in the playoff race, Mancini hit .176/.258/.364 for Houston and has been released by three different clubs in the following two seasons. McDermott is now one of the best pitching prospects in Triple-A.

Yilber Diaz, RHP, D-backs: It’s been a breakout season for Diaz, and Monday was his best outing of the season. Diaz struck out 13 of the 20 batters he faced as he held Sacramento hitless for six scoreless innings. The only two batters to reach came on walks. Diaz finished off a pair of strikeouts with his slider and two more with his cutter, but nine came on his fastball. He consistently dominated the RiverCats with 96-97 mph heaters. Diaz now has a 1-3, 3.27 record in four starts since he was promoted to Triple-A Reno. Reno is viewed as one of the toughest environments in baseball for pitchers. The Aces have a 6.00 ERA and their opponents are little better at 5.76.

Want to get ahead? Each day we’ll surface one prospect from recent Baseball America coverage who could be on the rise.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day

Jeremy Pilon, LHP, Rays: Pilon is part of a hard-throwing and interesting FCL Rays rotation. He’s the surprise of that group, as the Quebec-native was an 18th-round pick last year who was coming off Tommy John surgery. He’s now sitting in the mid 90s with the makings of a quality changeup. Pilon is coming off his best start as a pro. He struck out 10 while allowing three hits and one run in five innings against the FCL Twins last week.
