Prospect Standouts
Ralphy Velazquez, 1B, Guardians: Guardians 2023 first-rounder Ralphy Velazquez has opened the 2024 season on a hot stretch, which continued on Tuesday night. The catcher-turned-first baseman popped his third home run of the year on Tuesday night as part of an offensive onslaught that also saw Cleveland prospects Angel Genao, Jaison Chourio and Wuilfredo Antuñez collect multiple hits. With the blast, Velazquez is now 11-for-31 this season with two doubles in addition to the three homers.
Aidan Miller, SS, Phillies: After going homerless until the playoffs in his first taste of pro ball in 2023, Phillies prospect Aidan Miller has already doubled that total in 2024. The team’s most recent first-rounder popped his second home run of the year on Tuesday night, turning around an Irv Carter fastball for a blast that produced an exit velocity of 106.5 mph and traveled an estimated 427 feet. He was 2-for-5 on the night with a double and a home run.
Reggie Crawford, LHP, Giants: Giants prospect Reggie Crawford’s pro career has featured a lot of roadblocks and not a lot of playing time. Various injuries have zapped him time and again, and he dealt with a strained lat muscle that curtailed his spring training and delayed his official 2024 debut until Tuesday. In a one-inning outing, Crawford, a former two-way player and Connecticut alum, threw a zero on the board and recorded his first strikeout of 2024. The hitter was Stone Garrett and the finishing pitch was an elevated 98 mph fastball.
Tsung-Che Cheng, SS, Pirates: In a system bursting with pitching prospects, Tsung-Che Cheng stands as one of the Pirates’ most prominent hitting talents. The infielder can do a little bit of everything, and on Tuesday he did a lot against Bowie. As part of a 3-for-3 night, Cheng swatted his first home run of the season, scored a run, drove in two and worked a walk. He concluded the evening having reached base four times.
Jefferson Rojas, SS, Cubs: The Midwest League is notoriously tough on hitters in the early going thanks to weather conditions that oftentimes border on frigid. Even the best prospects tend to see their stats dip before the weather warms up. Cubs shortstop prospect Jefferson Rojas doesn’t seem to mind. The 18-year-old, who opened the season as the league’s second-youngest player, continued his early torrid stretch on Tuesday by collecting two more hits and a stolen base in his team’s loss to Beloit. The output marked Rojas’ third straight multi-hit game and continued a five-game hitting streak that started with a four-hit effort on April 10.
Cam Collier, 3B, Reds: Even as one of the youngest players in the Midwest League, Cam Collier is making a strong early impression. Against Fort Wayne on Tuesday, the 19-year-old Cincinnati prospect went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. The blast was his third of the season and second in the last three games. Collier made an effort to transform his body over the offseason, and the results are showing early. After nine games this season, he is 13-for-38 with a double and the three homers.

Baseball America Helium Pick Of The Day
Joendry Vargas, SS, Dodgers: Calling a Top 100 Prospect a helium pick feels like cheating, but the rising Dodgers shortstop joined our list for the first time this week. Vargas was the jewel of the Dodgers’ 2023 international class and responded with a fantastic showing in the Dominican Summer League, which included seven home runs and a .952 OPS. He’ll move stateside in 2024 and could quickly move up the ranks of his system.
